Former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow passed away this morning due to colon cancer. He had ulcerative colitis for years before the cancer showed up.

Rest in peace.

Very sad.  Regardless of your political leanings, he always seemed to be a classy individual.

Yeah, I hated to hear the news this morning. I didn't realize he was doing so poorly. He was a neat individual - definitely stood out in a crowd. Always had a smile on his face, too, even after everything he had been through.

Sad. Too bad he didn't use his position to bring some light regarding UC to the public. But that was his choice. He was pretty public during his cancer ordeal, though. Hopefully got a few people thinking about their colons. RIP.

Wow, I didn't know he had UC. I was sad to hear about his death, so young and such a nice young man. It seems like he had a great attitute about life. I want to try to get some of that.

Actually, after I think about it, I am surprised Tony Snow had UC.  You would think with UC, they would be on top of the colon with scopes, etc. and see the first signs of cancer and get it the heck out of there, even if it meant removing the colon.  I am curious too, how did you hear about him having UC?

I just googled it, he was a longtime sufferer of ulcerative colitis. This makes me think.......I want to have colonoscopies as often as I can, once a year would make me feel good. I will talk to my doc n Nov. and see if he thinks I'm nuts.lol

That is a great interview! What an optimistic guy! Said he had UC for 27 years and had yearly colonoscopies, but they probably missed the spot the previous year and saw it the next year and it was stage 3. He said he was truly happy to have to not deal with UC anymore after they took out his colon. Too bad the cancer got him. Definitely worth a listen too.

Bellski - I made the link to the interivew active. You should be able to just click on it. (it is the blue line in gedaliah's post) FYI - if a link is not active, you can just copy and paste into a browser window.

Hope that helps!

Edit:  You'll have to scroll down on the page that the link takes you to.  Look for "related documents".  Click on that link and allow it to load.

Tony Snow did have his colon removed when they first noticed the cancer in 2005. In 2007 it reoccurred in his liver. So from the sounds of it he actually died of liver cancer not colon cancer since he hasn't had one for 3 years. Either way that is just sad and the whole time I figured that colon cancer would be very low on my list of concerns with the amount of testing us UCers have. It is sad how it can come back like this.

I just listened to this. Great interview!

However, it is scary that his UC (27 years of it) lead to colon cancer - which he survived - but the cancer had spread to his liver (his second battle with cancer).

He did also mention that he lived in constant discomfort with his UC. At the time of this interview, he had a bag, but was looking forward to the jpouch reversal surgery after his cancer treatment. I wonder if he ever had that done.

WOW. I had no idea he had UC. Crazy....I've had UC for the past 11-12 years without getting yearly checkups. This changes my mind......

I am getting my colon out asap. Had no idea he had UC. I always say that after suffering with this 8 years, if I get cancer, I'm gonna kill somebody. I haven't had a scope in maybe 2 years - my doctor wanted to wait for my flare to settle down.

As each year goes on, the more paranoid I get about getting cancer.

It is scary. He had a colonoscpy every year. I am surprised. It makes me worry a little because once they saw dysplasia in my colon and then they didn't. I'm not going to let the fear get me. I hope. Good luck to you beanie. Did the doctor suggest colon removal for you?

Im surprised at the number of you who dont get regular colonoscopies. I was diagnosed last september with moderate uc (2months later with severe pancolitis) but even when it was thought to be moderate 20cm disease i was immediately told i was to have yearly check up colonoscopies...

I am a bit surprised too, even my doc (I'm switching in Nov.) doesn't do them each year. I want it each year. I am just scheduled for a flex sig to check for dysplasia nest summer which is one year. Is a flex sig just as good as a colonoscopy? When I switch doctors in Nov. I will express the desire to have a colonoscopy each year. The prep is rough but it is worth it to me.
