Second post, first thread. Well, I've been in remission now (1-2 solid BM's a day, virtually no blood) for a couple of weeks and am starting to taper my Pred today after seeing my GI yesterday to 50mg from 60mg (tapering 10mg a week). I'm also on Prevacid, 2 Asacol twice a day, an ABC Plus multivitamin (Centrum basically) and 325mg of iron twice a day for anemia (I was in a flare for about a month and a half before being diagnosed on June 18 through a flex sig; my diagnosis was complicated by a c. diff and rotavirus infection that I got at the end of April and which more than likely brought out my UC).
I'm concerned about how my body will react to the Pred taper as far as flaring goes. I just know I can't wait to be off of the stuff. I've got a nasty (only slightly itchy) acne/rash all over my shoulders and chest and spreading down my back and up my neck, my shoulders and arms ache, I'm easily irritated, and my appetite is substantially increased. My hands are shaking quite a bit as well. Pred is indeed nasty stuff. I hope the Asacol has kicked in and can fight off any inflammation but I want to try some natural meds and supplements to help it do its work. This forum has been a great resource so far. :D
I'm looking seriously at purchasing some AMP aloe pills (Aloeluyah specifically) and probiotics like VSL3 look promising as does Jianpiling. I already have a bottle of Florastor that I intended to take for the c. diff, but that got cleared up. I guess what I'm really wondering is how long should I wait through the pred taper to start any natural meds to supplement the Asacol? What are some good first herbs or supplements to take to simply extend remission? Any help you guys can give is greatly appreciated.
