Just curious.  How much fiber to you all take to get "normal" BM's?  Or is that just impossible?  I am taking 4 Liada daily and rowasa at night.  When I try and skip nights w/ rowasa blood comes back.  I have been on rowasa for about 4 months.

I use Benefiber (powder) every day. I can't tolerate Metamucil in any form or Fibercon or Citrucel - so Benefiber is my best option. I also eat long cooking Oatmeal some mornings for good fiber.

If you're referring to fibre supplements, you should always start out with the smallest amount and increase slowly and only if necessary.

If you're talking food, it's the same basically, start out with a small amount of fibre daily and increase slowly until you find what works best for your system...expect extra bloating and gas from either source of fibre (food/supplements)...this is normal and once your system adjusts is when you increase it by a little, if necessary.

I just went to a dietician and she was confused that metamucil could be good. She recommended I ask my doctor but she said if your intestines are still bleeding or have wounds then sending fiber through there (which can't be broken down) will just brush up against those wounds and make them worse. She told me to look for foods with 2grams or less of fiber in servings. I will ask my gi doctor next week when I go to see him, what he things about it.

Yes, your dietician is certainly confused...eating fibrouse foods are not the only thing that will rub through the intestines, any form of poops can do that regarless of what you're eating...taking a metamucil caplet will help bulk up your stools but you need to know that your stools also have mucus on and in them so it's not like your poop will be like sandpaper just because you're eating fibrous foods or taking fibre supplements...

BTW, it was my GI (who happens to be one of the lead researchers for IBD in Canada) that told me to take fibre supplements daily for the rest of my life, best advice I've gotten in my 17 yrs of dealing with IBD.

I use Prodiem tabs one just before bed with enough water to get it all the way down...

I'm either allergic or non-responsive to traditional oral RX so I had no choice but to put my (HUGE) skeptisism aside and try the natural route (which I've been doing for about 5 yrs now)...

I use bee propolis, fibre supplement (which my GI urged me to take), omegas 3-6-9, probiotics called primadophilus reuteri (which aided my high cholesterol and severe lactose intolerance issues as well as vaginal health), vitamins A and C (I also take B12 but not to help with my CD symptoms directly), I drink chamomile tea and water (on occassion 100% fresh juice) exercise regularly with cardio and weights, have eliminated fast-foods, processed foods/beverages, animal fats, refined sugar and sugar substitutes/artificial sweetners from my diet.

I used to "go" 30+ times/day with bleeding, tons of mucus, horrible lower back pain and anywhere from semi-formed to mush to D...I now go 5 or less times a day, fully formed stools, no bleeding, no mucus, no pain...Most of the credit for this goes to the bee propolis and fibre supplements but the combination of all has brought me down to the level I'm presently at, not full remission as I still have issues with urgency and frequency as 5/day for me is not "normal" (one/day is)...but I'll take what I can get...My GI also encourages me to continue on this route, to him it doesn't matter that oral RX aren't helping me so long as something does, now that's a good GI.

I have crohn's colitis (CD affecting my colon) and have never been in full remission due to complications with perianal crohn's skin tags which is where my disease actually started (on the outside of my anus) and then moved inwards.

And here is a link from the CCFC...my GI answers questions in the "Ask the Doctor" portion which this link will take you directly to, just so happens a UCer posed your very same Q about new meds in the pipeline...

Thanks so much for the response. Sounds like you really know your stuff with alternative medicines. I do alot of the things you mentioned with your diet but I am more specific carbohydrate diet and I do eat meat. What exactly does bee prop. do for UC again? And what is a good supplement to take? Like the cheap bottles at Wal-Mart?

I eat meat too, mainly chicken and fish...I'm pretty sure there's waaaaaay more to know about alternatives then what I know...I've only gone by the advice of others to try the things I've tried knowing that what works for some doesn't work for all, it's all trial and error but thanks for the compliment :)

As I mentioned, I have crohn's colitis (CD affecting my colon) but there are some UCers who have had some success with bee propolis...make sure you're not allergic to bees otherwise it's best to avoid all bee products...in a nut shell, BP is an natural anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial...it's priced well at puritans pride online, I doubt you'll find it in walmart.

Probiotics are necessary since we IBDers tend to have bacterial over-growth, the one I use is called Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way which I buy at my local health food store in the refridgerator since it must be kept cold....if you aren't taking probiotics I strongly urge you to, like with everything eles what works for some doesn't work for all so it's important you find a probiotic that works for you, the Primadophilus caps are a good starting point, lots of people here take many different kinds, some of them also take the Primadophilus.

I've been flairing for six weeks, and am five days into a course of Prednisolone.  Which is doing wonders.

I've started taking 1.5 tsps of Metamucil twice a day, half an hour after lunch and half an hour after dinner.  You must remember to drink plenty of water (but we should be doing that anyway).

Metamucil has changed my life, I now enjoy formed BM's twice to three times day.  No bleeding, that sense of urgency has gone, I now have time to get to the bathroom, which is a luxury.

I know the Pred has a lot to do with my lessening symptoms, but the change in my inner health that is a direct result of the increased fibre content of my diet is nothing short of a miracle.
