I am just wondering what the UC'er who responds to mesalamine does if they can't tolerate taking horse pills and many of them on a daily basis?  Is there a liquid formulation?  Anyone out there doing this?

I take Colazal and instructions say...

COLAZAL capsules may also be administered by carefully opening the capsule and sprinkling the capsule contents on applesauce. The entire drug/applesauce mixture should be swallowed immediately; the contents may be chewed, if necessary, since contents of COLAZAL are NOT coated beads/granules. Patients should be instructed not to store any drug/applesauce mixture for future use.

If the capsules are opened for sprinkling, color variation of the powder inside the capsules ranges from orange to yellow and is expected due to color variation of the active pharmaceutical ingredient.

Teeth and/or tongue staining may occur in some patients who use COLAZAL in sprinkle form with food.

Maybe you could try this. Ask your doctor.

I've never heard of a liquid Mesalamine preparation. Both Asacol and Lialda are coated so they don't dissolve until they get to the colon; a liquid preparation might all be absorbed in the small intestine and never reach the colon.

i have not heard of liquid mesalasine, but i am currently on mesalasine granules.

they are great!!!!
no 9-12 or more pills a day.
just dump the little sachet of granules on the tongue and wash it down with water or juice.

the granules look like the little sprinkle dots on donuts or cupcakes and they are sweet too.

just awesome.
they also go further than the other pills and disperse throughout the WHOLE colon down to the end.
lots of studies show that it works better than pills.

they are available in australia, but i dont think they are in the US yet.
thank god im here rather than there. (im from cali, but now in aus)
steph - 32 - female - UC since 2000
currently flaring again..  grrr! (triggered by stress - grrr)
mesalazine granules 3g x1 a day (much nicer than a million tablets a day)
enteric coated fish oil -omega 3 (so they get all the way to my colon)
vitamin D3 x1 a day
prednisolone 25mg x1 a day (ick ick and did i say ick?)
tumeric capsules x3 a day

The only problem with dissolving the med is that it'll process through the liver initially. Try to get it into your body past the stomach before it dissolves....

My take on it...

Quincy, How would one try to get the medicene past the stomach before it dissolves? I agree with you that the medicene needs to get into the colon and dissolve. Guess that's the way the Lialda is working for me now.

kops2da- Do you empty it into the applesauce? Does your Colazol dissove in the stomach or colon?

I am trying to find a smaller pill to take. I'm thinking about bariatric surgery and the medicene I take now may hinder this, as it may be too large to get through.

According to the information about administering Colazal it says....

"COLAZAL capsules contain a powder of balsalazide disodium that is insoluble in

acid and designed to be delivered to the colon as the intact prodrug" so even outside the capsule it will not desolve until it gets to the colon!  I believe this is designed for children as the pills are so huge but why would not work for us adults too.  Ask your doctor.

email colazal....the original capsule is to allow it to get past the stomach from what I understand. The company should give you the proper advice rather than assuming it's OK.

I certainly recommended that anyone talk with their doctor or perhaps a pharmacist about this.  The info I quoted was from their website and enclosed insert with my Colazal.

No one should do anything like this on their own.  But looks like a great way - especially for children to be able to use it. (and those who can't take those HUGE pills and they are HUGE)

Thanks for the responses! Don't worry--I'm not going to jeopardize my remission status. I've got my GI doc and my weight loss doc's GI looking into some things. It may or may not work. I don't want to be back on prednisone or any big guns meds b/c of a flare that could have been held at bay with Lialda. You all are just great!
