hello, i have been taking rowasa enema 4 to 5 times a day for the past 6 years. i stopped about 2 1/2 months ago because my UC has been under control. i noticed major hair loss and am not sure it has anything to do with this drug. i am 37 years old and female. my head has been itchy for the past week. anybody have similar symptoms or advice?

Hi alli,

I've had the hair loss and itchy scalp for a couple of months.  My med experience is not the same as yours, though.  I'm trying to reduce the number of asacol I'm taking and switching to rowasa.  Quincy asked some good questions that I hope will help me make a gradual med switch.

Are you washing your hair the same as before or less frequently because you're afraid to see the hair loss?  That could effect the itchiness, especially if you're not washing it as often.  Also, you may be growing hair more rapidly and the new little hairs could be contributing to the itch.  Last, if you're on any form of prednisone, that can contribute to hair loss.

Good luck!

Hi..welcome to the forum.

I need clarification regarding how often you use the Rowasa...4 - 5 times a DAY? a WEEK? a MONTH?

Have you been on pred at all during the past year?

5ASA meds can cause haiross as can thyroid disorders, diarrhea, hormonal ups and downs..etc.

Have you discussed it with your doctor? Is your itching all over? only in one area?

Can you pull hair out by just running your hands through your hair or is it in the shower?

Are you taking vitamin B supplements? A mixed one would be good.

Are you on the pill? Did you recently stop?

Are you using any cholesterol meds?

What other supplements are you taking?

Have you recently changed shampoos?

Considering you've just started having the hairloss and the itchy scalp and have been on the 5ASA med for a long while but have recently stopped...it "could" be, but there might be something else going on as well.

I'd hate for you to assume it's the most obvious and not look into other possibilities.
