Just wanted to know how prednisone has affected people...my twin sister was on it for her UC and gained alot of weight, was hungry all the time, was irritable, and had night sweats. My dad was on it before and gained no weight, he was just cranky haha...just wondering, because i'm going to be diagnosed soon (i most likely have uc) and just have the feeling that they r gonna put me on stupid prednisone and i really dont want to do it! i'm wondering if they can try me on something like asecol or 6mp first, like my twin sister who is in remission because of it. it seems to have milder side effects and i'm hoping the doc would put me on that before prednisone..it seems like he's leaning that way anyways...so any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated :)

I got every side effect pretty much, though I have been on it since Sept 07 for my UC and Kidneys. I have gained about 15 pounds all in my chest/neck area.

However, I was on 60mg for the first month, major mood swings and crying, hot flashes, then went down to 60/40 alt days the next month and 40mg the month after that, the third month was when the moonface, weight gain, water retention, etc. really kicked in.

Watch your salt intake while on it (i'm at 1500mg a day) and if you are not on it for long you may not get that many effects.

HTH!

My mom was on a lot of pred before she died. She was irritable, paranoid, moonface, She wouldn't have stayed alive without it though. It gave us 2 extra years with her after the first time she coded. I am afraid of it. I have enough trouble with my weight. And my moods. lol If your doctor puts you on pred right away I would try a different doc. I had severe inflammation when I got diagnosed. Asacol and Canasa got it under control extremely quickly. Now I only have mild inflammation I think. The colon is not all red and bleeding any more. I hope you don't have UC. If you do, I say: "Just Say no to Prednisone!" At least for now. Everyone is totally different. I just vote for trying everything else first. Prednisone can cause a lot of other health problems. It is a life saver for sure, but at a cost.

Hi,

I have been trying to taper off of Prednisone for awhile now.  I have been on it for a year and luckily i have not had any side effects that can come with it.  Other then the fact that it is bad for your body in general i wish i could stay on it because it keeps my UC under control.  However since its not good to be on a long time i have been tapering and having a hard time getting off of it.  This is my 4th taper and now they are trying to use Entocort with it to see if that helps any.  So far i am down to 15mg of Pred and doing ok.  Prednisone affects everyone differently (as you have seen in your own family).
