I just started taking pred today but not for UC. I have a raging case of poison ivy that hasn't improved in two weeks. I finally broke down and went to the dermatologist. He gave me a 10 day course of pred. He usually prescribes longer but since I'm pregnant he kept it short. I take 2 pills (20mg each) for the first 5 days then 1 pill the last 5 days. This is my first time ever taking pred. Can I expect this short course to have any affect on my UC? I've heard that pred really only helps the first time? Will this mess things up down the road if I need to use pred again for my UC? Should I expect any side effects from being on it for 10 days? Thanks!

AMK77, that is a very low dose of Prednisone. It may have a mild positive effect on your UC (decreased bleeding or frequency if you're flaring) but likely you won't notice any difference. For UC, we usually take 40 mg. and then taper after two to six weeks.

Pred's effectiveness isn't limited to the first course. Many people take it repeatedly with good results, although the effectiveness eventually decreases for most of us. Your short, low-dose course shouldn't have any effect on it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and I hope you manage to stay healthy throughout.

Hi

Judilyn, I read that AMK is taking 40 mg pred for 10 days then 20 mg for 5 days.  Is that right AMK?
If so you might want to run this by your GI doc.  I don't have that much experience with pred, but from what I've read people taking here, it seems like a pretty fast taper, and I have no idea how that would effect your UC.

I second the congrats!

I agree w/potato, check on the taper sched, since you have UC it may be good to do a slower taper, that is what I brought up to my kidney doc when he wanted me to taper by 10mg, I was like b/c of my UC I think I should go by 5mg and he was cool w/that.
Beth, 32 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to put a call into my GI and see what he thinks about this pred schedule. It does seem like I'm going off of it pretty fast and I want to make sure I do this right.
