I am 3 and half months pregnant and just started flaring last week after being in remission for almost 2 years.  I always take metamucil every evening before bed, but now that I am bleeding I'm not sure if  it's doing more harm by causing more blood or good.

1.When your flaring and bleeding do you continue with metamucil or stop it until things settle down?

Even when I had blood I took my Prodiem (similar to metamucil) but if you're unsure you can always get confirmation from your doc.

Feel better soon :)

Hi,
Firstly congratulations on your pregnancy, you must be very excited.
In answer to your question I found Metamucil to be beneficial duiring my recent flare, I was a bit nervous at first, as I thought that the extra fibre may have an abbrasive effect on my colon, but that has turned out not to be the case.  I think the key is to find the right dose for you, you don't want to go to heavy handed, I've found if I spread my dose out so I take a level teaspoon of Metamucil with a cup of water (250mls) after each meal, everything seems to run pretty smoothly.
I see that you are just taking it at night, maybe try spreading it out through the day that way it will have less of an impact on your colon than trying to cope with a larger single dose.

Hi WishfulMA,  the salofalk tablets, suppositories and cortifoam are all safe during pregnancy.  The doctor approved them and I also called Motherisk who studies the effects of meds on pregnancy and they said ok.  With my first pregnancy I started flaring and was placed on bedrest for 5 months because the colitis was causing pre term labour symptoms.  My second was a breeze, now this one I'm determined to control things immediately with rectal meds they seem to work the fastest.

My doc told me to take citrucel (or fiber ) during flare and bleeding. If you are not sure, check with the doctor. Sometimes you know your own body best. Maybe it doesn't agree with you.
