Hi all

I was diagnosed with Proctitis in November 2004 (age 33) . Before that i have never had this disease.

It started in Aug 2004, when on holiday in India, I was invited to a wedding where i had eaten lots of meat and drank lots of Beer (i don't drink, so i thought i'd try some beer).

The next day i felt unwell and had diarrhea and a high fever. The doctors there kept saying I've got Delhi belly and tropical diarrhea, typhoid, and put me on lots of medcine. In the 5 weeks there i never felt well and the diarrhea never went, when i returned to UK, it got worse, when ever i would 'break wind' it would hurt, and i stopped eating, as the pain when i passed stools were too much. I ended up being 9st in weight due to not eating. I was sent to hospital (november) where i spent 2 weeks having all tests done and my stools being examined. I did get better as i was put onto  ASACOL 6 tablets a day and PREADFOAM. I went to India again in March 2005 no problems could eat and drink normal. I also had a camera put in my behind in September 2006, and was told i have Mild Left Side Proctitis.  I did have a little flair-up in October 2006, due to eating too much meat curry on one day, but i started taking the asacol and Preadfoam again was better within 2 weeks. I started to enjoy normal life again.

In November 2006 i went to a Club with friends where i met a girl, all we did was kiss, nothing else, although see did say see has a mouth ulcer.

1 week later i had a fever and got shingles and chicken pox, and have HSV 1 which attacks my right eye and i had eczema all over my body. I use to get frequent pains in my right eye due to the virus hiding in my spinal cord and attacking my right eye due to mine immune system being down.

Lost my job, as i could'nt go in Feb 2007. I was put onto Aciclovir which helped keep the virus away. The Proctitis never bothered me, and in October 2007 i went to India again for 10 weeks at this stage gave up my medicine ASACOL as i did'nt need it.

In Febuary 2008 i went to a friends house and i eat a little too much, and about 1 week later i started seeing mucas appear when i use to break wind, so started on the ASACOL again 1 tablet a day. In March 2008 i went to india again, and i took ASACOL but no Preadfoam, and my symtoms never went away, i would have the slight blood and mucas in my stool, i was still taking my Aciclovir  as well. I came back in May 2008 and started using PREADFOAM

Now its JULY 2008 and its not gone away i have the mucas, blood in my stools, I can't break wind due to mucas coming out, if i lie on my left-hand side i can break wind without discharge.

I gave up taking ACICLOVIR and ASACOL, as according to WIKI they can cause diarrhea and i only use PREADFOAM 1 times in 1 or 2 days

BOTH HSV 1 and PROCTITIS are involved with Sex or STD.... YET i'm still a Virgin I want to stay pure till marriage, so why due i have them, theres no one else in my family that has had this. could the girl with the mouth ulcer given me HSV 1 through just kissing

Why is it not going away (Proctitis) Its been 3 months.

Never smoked and only drank alcohol once in 2004

Will there be a cure, as i'm sick of having this urge to go, i only eat one meal a day, yet about 30 mins after eating the meal I discharge mucas. If i don't eat i'm ok

I'm gonna start using PREADFOAM 2 times a day from 1 AUG 2008, will this help

The rectal meds (predfoam) will likely help you get out of this flare but it can take time so be patient.

Hi Zack,

Ulcerative Colitis is an auto-immune disease, no one knows why we have it and what sets it off in the begining. There is a 'pattern' in families but there are many people who have no family history of it. You have done nothing wrong and UC is not any type of STD and cannot be transferred from one person to another thru kiss, touch, air etc.

I have had UC since 2000 I took sulfasalazine and Asacol, I would take my meds then feel fine and then stop taking my meds and then would go into a flare at some point. Most people need to take maintenance meds every day to keep them from flaring. If it is just the possibility of diarreah you are worried about and so not taking your meds b/c of that, then think about the possibility of a flare. Or if I misunderstood and you actually get diarreah from these meds then you should contact your Doctor there are other meds out there.

In Oct 07 I had to stop taking Asacol and prior to that I only had a small portion of my colon affected by UC just the first 11cm, after I stopped the Asacol I went into the worst flare I have ever had blood, mucous, cramping, nausea, going 25+ times a day, I was a zombie, I should have been hospitalized (but I downplayed my symptoms to my GI). I stoped taking Asacol b/c of a Kidney disease I have and was on prednisone, which should have prevented a flare but did not (I did this while under a Dr's. care). Now I have Pan-colitis, which affects my whole colon and I am terrified of flaring again like I did last Oct. I believe my whole colon is affected now b/c I stopped Asacol cold turkey and went into a severe flare (that is my theory).

What I am trying to say is that if the meds do not hurt you, stay on them, it is better than risking a flare up and sounds to me like when you go off the meds you flare up at some point................but you do not flare when you are on them. Is that correct?

I am sorry you are going through all of this and know what it's like to shart (farting with Sh.. coming out). I recommend contacting your Dr. and see what course is recommended for you.

Take care!
Beth, 32 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!
