Okay.. ya know that part of your butt crack that sometimes shows when you bend over?? Mine is KILLING ME!! It's very sore and red. This happened long ago before my flare and I actually thought it was because I changed brands of body wash! I thought it may have been some sort of skin rash or something. But, in the end.. I think it is Colitis related or something. The only thing that I find soothes it is moisturizer and a warm bath. Anybody else have this issue??

have you taken a look to see what's going on?

An external hemorrhoid will cause that particular pain for me...and it's a constant. Worse than a flare actually.

The other thing is a possible fistula..but you'll have to really do the look-see (yes, squat over a mirror) to know. A blue swollen area around the anus would be an external hemmie...

If it's red and irritated, it could be a rash from yeast....it could be both. Canesten cream helps with that.

Ain't it fun???

Hey.. thanks for the reply. I did look into the mirror.. lol.. The pain and redness is above my anus.. just where my butt crack starts... Its just red and sore.. doesn't look like much else.

Sounds like a yeast infection. Your doctor can prescribe a cream for it; until then you can try using an antifungal powder like Lotrimin. Because we "go" so much and use wet wipes and the skin tends to stay moist in the area, yeast can grow there, and it's really painful.

You should use medicated wiped Prep H & Tucks make them.

If you have a fissure or tearing using regular toilet paper will make it worse & spread infection.

Keeping the area very clean is important.

Mine is doing the exact same thing..except mine is more the middle-to-lower butt crack...lol. It has been hurting for about a week now. At first, my vagina area hurt then it moved to my butt crack. I have had both areas hurt before and it usually lasts a few days, then goes away on its own. I was thinking a possible mild yeast infection, but I don't know.

sounds like some kind of rash, either fungal or bacterial.
i got the same thing several months ago and mine started when i used the flushable wet wipes for the first time.
i tried antifungal creams, diaper rash creams, antibacterial creams, etc... (sorry, can't recall which one finally did the trick)
it took forever because you want to give one thing a try for more than just one day. but it finally went away with one of those types of products and without a trip to the doc.
everyone kept telling me to use the A&D diaper stuff but i'm positive that one didn't help.

good luck, no fun indeed!

It could be fissures...fistulas don't really coincide with UC, but they do with crohn's.  I just got my summer 2008 journal from the CCFC of which my own GI answers questions in the "Dear Doctor" section (he's one of the top lead researchers for IBD in Canada, Dr. Remo Panaccione)

One of the questions asked was from a UCer that complained of having a fistula (she's 70 yrs old) in his answer to her he states that fistulas are related to crohn's disease, not UC and that every attempt should be made for a correct DX and to review all the previous investigations and perform new investigations (tests) to ensure that it is not crohn's disease...he also does mention that some people can actually have both CD and UC and that a UCer that has their colon removed can infact develop crohn's disease if they happen to have both forms of IBD and were not aware...it's not very common but it is possible.

Fissures can happen with UC or crohn's.

pb4 - Are you talking about anal fissures? Wouldn't those be right around or in the anus, not further up the butt crack?

I use the wet wipes too. I use a little bit of baby powder(cornstarch kind)and make sure that it reaches where it needs to be. Not too much, just a little.

Fissures usually are right around the butt-hole but depending on how one wipes, the friction of toilet paper rubbing upwards the crack could cause issues in that area...I like using EVOO as it instanly soothes and heals...I use them on my perianal crohn's skin tags, and have had fissures in the past ontop of those tags, not fun.

I use A&D ointment (the white zinc oxide kind) for baby diaper rash. Oh yeah...and a big old panti liner because it's really messy. But it does the trick usually.

I get a little over zealous at times when I'm wiping (especially when in flare). I also use baby wipes at times.

Thanks, pb4. Fissures on top of skin tags definitely does not sound like fun!

Ya, I never thought I'd be an "expert" when it came to butt-cracks and butt-holes, not exactly something to brag about that's for sure LOL!

The EVOO is sooo soothing *I find it to be anyways* and it's great for healing the area quickly!!!

Good luck :)

EVOO that's the first I've heard that one. . .nice tip I'll try that next time. I always raid my baby's stash of diaper creams and powder when I get sore, always worked for me so I never tried anything else.

What about one of those cysts you can get on your tail bone. I forget what they are called but I know a few people that have had them. They are usually right around where your butt crack starts.

My mother use to get those she told me. She started having them after she fell off a horse and landed on her bum. She hasn't had them in over 15 years. She never found out what they were.

Mine is pretty much hea;ed up.. the EVOO worked.. I think. I only used a little and only applied it the once. Like I said before, it usually heals up on its own after a few days anyway. Good luck Sara14 :)

When I was little (long ago) my older siblings (sisters) all used to tease me and say my butt was broken because it had a big crack down the middle of it....that's where that came from, little did any of us know that by the time I'd hit my early 20's those words would hold true thanks to crohn's disease.

Ya that EVOO does wonders, it's why I use it as a full body moisturizer every single day, I bruise easily and since using the EVOO, my bruises are much better and go away before they get a chance to get real ugly...I use it to soothe my perianal crohn's skin tags, it's doesn't make them better but they feel better even though they are still flaring.
