I'm on sulfasalazine (4  a day) can I take canasa at night? My doc told me to stay away from gluten and I have but since starting the meds I've been feeling good enough to eat and eating what I want for about one day. Does anyone notice that if they stay off gluten and then add it back in they bleed? I seriously feel like it messes with my head where I have to lay down and then I have urgency with blood. I'm thinking it's either the yeast or the gluten. Just wanted to ask that question, but mainly can you take rectal meds with sulfasalazine, like Canasa?

Yes, you can take rectal meds with sulfasalazine.

I won't comment on the gluten thingy because I don't believe food causes bleeding. I'll save that for the believers.

If you're having problems with 5ASA meds..then don't take them.

Maybe you'd be better with steroid topicals such as Entocort and foam enemas.

5asa what are those again? Would that be canasa? I don't take Asacol b/c of the side effects, but this sulfasalzine seems to be better, but it seems like I'm having a set back. Whats the difference between 5asa meds and Entocort?

5-ASA medications are 5-aminosalicylic acid or 5-aminosalicylates. They're salicylates and some people are sensitive them or their type or formulation.

5ASA meds used for UC/CD are:

sulfasalazine oral (Azulfidine,Salazopyrin)

mesalasine / mesalazine / mesalamine oral and rectal (Asacol, Pentasa, Salofalk, Canasa, Rowasa, Ipocol, Mesren MR, Mezavant XL..)

olsalazine oral (Dipentum)

balsalamide oral (Colazal)

hope this helps.
