Daughter is 8, diagnosed with UC in 11/2007.  Still on prednisone, apparently she's dependent on it.  Down to .5 mg once a day, on Lialda and Purinethol (6mp).  Any of you done this regime?  She's developed (last week) acid reflux.  Wondering if it's from the med combos or if this is a new development in her overall health.  Bloodwork shows normal enzyme activity but her body isn't yet metabolizing the 6mp - it's been 4 months.

I take prilosec, I began getting a pain under my right rib cage and as long as I take it, I am good, I think it may be b/c of the pred. I have not had heartburn since I started taking it 9 mos ago, check w/your Doc.
Beth, 32 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!

Reflux is a very common side effect of Prednisone. I always took Rantitidine when I was on Pred to prevent the reflux.

I didn't know that - been on the Prednisone since November.  Started with 10 mg 2xdaily then weaned down to 2 mg 2xdaily and flared up again in March.  Now down to .5mg 1xdaily and this acid reflux has just come on.  Good to know it can be a side effect - hoping to get off the Prednisone so then maybe the reflux will stop.  In the meantime, taking Prevacid 15mg 1xdaily - started today!  Hope it helps the symptoms.

Confused as to why after almost a year on prednisone she'd develop the reflux when we're down to only 1/2 mg a day. She just began taking Purinethol on July 29. She takes it twice a day, 50 mg each dose. I'm looking at the online information on overdose and her symptoms fall into that as well as those of acid reflux. Dizziness, nausea, lethargic, low grade fever. Taking her in now for blood work. She threw up after eating only 2 bites of melon this morning. Now her stomach is empty and she has to take the Lialda. Withholding the morning dose of Purinethol until after the doctor visit. This is just the family doctor, not her Pediatric GI.

Big Dog, the symptoms you're describing could be related to liver malfunction, so blood work is definitely a good starting point in light of her being on Pruinethol. If it's our of wack, call her GI right away.

Called the specialist handling her case and she said to pull her off the Purinethol until the bloodwork comes in. We skipped this a.m.'s dose and will skip tonight's as well. Dr thinking similar to some of you - liver function, overdose of Purinethol and she mentioned prednisone withdrawal symptoms. Daughter doing so great today - she's out of bed and she ate a little bit. She still gets dizzy (she calls it her eyes going blind) when she stands up, but the vomit balling up in her throat is gone. Is it possible that if a Purinethol overdose that we'd see her getting better this quickly after stopping it? She still took the Lialda this morning. Dr put her on the Purinethol specifically because she felt our daughter was prednisone dependent and the Purinethol 6MP allows one to quit the prednisone after a few months.
