Ever since my summer vacation started, I've been sick with one thing after another. First I was diagnosed with a nasty yeast infection that lasted for at least a month. I had to take boric acid suppositories for that duration of time.

Then my uc related arthritis was flaring up. I had to be put on prednisone for it. This all happened before my Disney trip. The night I came back from Disney, I got sick with what I think is a sinus infection. I am on antiobotics now but its doing nothing for me. I have to go back to the doctor again!! I was supposed to go away with my friend to Cape May but I just feel horrible and don't want to get out of bed!!!! Driving to the doctor's even makes me feel miserable.

Has anyone canceled vacation plans due to being sick? Were your vacation buddies understanding about it? I already gave my friend the heads up and she's not being very understanding about it. Just curious to know how other UC suffers handle this type of situation.

Also, what can I do to stop getting sick? I feel like its one thing after another and its ruining my summer vacation!! :-(

Thanks for listening to  me vent. I am so frustrated! I also had to postpone my remicade infusion due to the yeast infection. Now, I probably have to postpone the infusion again due to being sick. :(

Hi ilusunflowers, I'm new to all of this I have to say as I was only recently diagnosed however one thing that has stuck in my mind is the doc telling me that due to the tablets I'm taking I'd be more prone to catching things as my immune system isn't up to par to fight things off. As a result I've been making sure I take my 'extras' - vitamins etc. to help fight things including vit C.

I missed my best friends wedding due to being sick with this. I was so fed up and disappointed. I hope it's not a taste of things to come in the future. I have also had two yeast infections since coming home from the hospital......I sympatise with you. Pardon the pun but it's a pain in the backside ;-)

I think you have to stay positive though (hard as it may seem when you keep missing out on life due to being sick) I think mental attitude has a lot to do with our wellbeing.

Hope you feel better soon....

lyndac thanks for your kind words. I am sorry to hear that you've been through this as well. I totally agree with you that attitude has a lot to do with your well-being. I honestly do not know what's been causing my illnesses the past month. I do agree with you that its a pain in the backside!!!! I like that pun. I hope you feel better as well. i don't take any vitamins and I think I need to start doing so. I've missed out on a few important functions over the past few years from being sick. I hope it does get better. Take care of yourself.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are going through such difficult times. Unfortunately, whether it is Prednisone because of a flare or Remicade regularly, my immune system is comprimised and it's done on purpose. So I am always catching things and usually strange things. Like getting Shingles b/c I was under a great deal of stress. I get eye infections and arthritis, and now I catch any nasty bug that goes around the office. I do have to admit that I seem to get more of this stuff when stressed. But not always. Good luck and try to keep your head up. And enjoy yourself and take vacations as much as you can b/c you deserve it and it can't hurt things, right?

oh i agree taking vacations would be great for me but I cannot deal with car trips right due to feeling lousy. also my friend isn't the most understanding person when it comes to my health. i guess its all about comfort level. this is why i rarely travel. if i do travel, its usually with my immediate family (mother, father, etc.) because they know what I go through. sigh...thanks for your insights! i m going to the doctor tonight at 5pm. wish me luck!

I certainly have done my share of canceling trips and parties.  I think it comes with the territory.  Do what you think is best for you.

If you are going to lose money by backing it out you could consider going and just staying in/near the hotel while your friends are out and about. Boring, but if you are going to be sick at home might as well be sick in a different location lol. If you think you would be more miserable sick in a hotel then stay home. But if all you need is a bed, toilet and shower than go for it!

Nah, I've decided to stay home. That is what the doctor said I should do anyway. The nurse even said that a road trip will make my situation worse! My friend is mad at me but you know what-if a friend is not understanding about a sudden illness regardless of what it may be, then she is not a true friend. Trust me, I've found this the hard way over the years. This is the same friend I had a falling out with a few years ago. I was very ill one day with a migraine and she bit my head off because I canceled plans that we had to hang out the following day. Its just not worth it. My health is more important.

I have a history with people who don't understand too. I am not friends with the two people I thought would still be here! We were all friends for TEN YEARS and I guess they just couldn't handle it. I couldn't go out with them drinking, and eventually I was phased out.

Pathetic!

I had to do what was best for me though. I stay home from a lot of things, but it's just what I have to do sometimes.

You'll figure it out.
21 years old

Diagnosed with moderate/severe UC June 2007

Taking Lialda 3x a day, and just started taking Entocort(3 pills/day) on 5/29/08. Started to taper off on the steroid, but, that proved to be bad..

Severely anemic, was taking 3 65mg iron tablets a day, now just down to 1 because my hemoglobin levels are almost normal, and I cannot stand the stomach aches I get from all that iron. However, I was down to just 1 Entocort a few days ago and started to have a flare, so, I might have ruined my levels again. =/

Agreed you find out who your friends are thats for sure and sometimes its not the ones you think. You do what you have to and just get well that is the main thing send a hug though this is a rough thing to have as it mostly has no outward signs of being ill and most of the time we kid ourselves by saying we are fine when not as it is just better than trying to say how we are.

thanks for your support lambkins, laura220, and luna0. i am almost 30 and been going through this for more than 15 years. i agree that you do find out who your true friends are through hard times like this. the friend i was supposed to go away with tomorrow and i had the same situation happen to us a few years ago. i had a dibilitating migraine where i was unable to attend some get together with her and her boyfriend. she called me every name in th ebook. her parents even hung up on me when i tried calling my friend's house. so we stopped talking for a few years and became friends again. i hate the feeling of being afraid to talk to her when things like this happens. so this is why i've decided to take a step back and just do things that are best for me. thanks for your support!!! :-D
