Can anyone suggest a good Anti-Spasmodic, I am currently using Buscopan which is giving me really bad headache and I always seem to feel drowsy.

How about natural Anti-Spasmodics? Anyone?...

Hi!  Enteric coated peppermint oil capsules are a natural anti-spasmodic they also help for pain and soothing the intestines.  I use pepogest brand.

dicyclomine works for me...awesome stuff for the past 19+ years.
I did start with 10mg and about 5 years ago upped to 20mg.

It can relax your eyes a bit.

I've never gotten a headache from it...

I was on hyoscyamine for awhile, .375 mg or something, it really seemed to help but when I moved to Iowa my doctor had no idea what it was and wouldn't prescribe it.

I also like hysoscyamine but there is currently a shortage of it because one of the generic manufacturers stopped producing it.
26 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

I also use dicyclomine. It won't do much during a bad flare (if you've eaten a particularly bad trigger food, in my case). I tend to take it if I'm feeling relatively good but need to ensure a couple hours of relief (a long car ride, a dinner party, etc.) It makes me feel ever-so-slightly drowsy (not much) and gives me the tiniest bit of cotton mouth.

what exactly do people take these for? My GI has never suggested adding them to my med regime...what, do they paralyze your colon? Like super-powered Immodium? and do you take them daily, or as needed?

diagnosed with UC '02

I think they're just a relaxant so that your colon doesn't spasm so much (leading to diarrhea). I honestly don't know how much good they do. I do think they take the edge off of severe cramping. When I take one, I also take two Tylenol to help with the pain of the cramping. My directions say to take them as needed (up to four times a day). I've never used them that often, though...

They're a smooth muscle relaxant, antispasmodic and can slow down the colon a bit. Kind of allowing the natural rhythm to happen than it being out of control. They don't imobilise the colon...although can cause constipation if too many are taken.

It'll definitely slow down the colon...are you having that much diarrhea that you need it?

I was prescribed it when I had severe diarrhea (I'm assuming whatever "it" was was the initial UC flare 3 yars before diagnosis...I lost a lot of weight, and the lomotil worked..and I was sooo stoned on it, but didn't have one pain in my body..woohoo). The prescription was probably a high dosage...I didn't take it often.

Have you not tried dicyclomine yet?

It's looking like I'm in a flare, Quincy.  It started about when I began using the Rowasa.  The past few days it's been D about 10 times a day, all day long.  The docs office suggested lomotil for the constant colon spasms and I've got an rx for hydrocortisone enema 2 x day.  I'm to be trying it and hoping it works.

I used bentyl for years when I was having IBS problems.  No real problems with it, just some tiredness, dizziness and nausea.  I started feeling better and gradually quit taking it.

I've got an HMO now so for the most part it's go with their flow.  I plan to cut the lomotil in half at least at first.  I did take it about 30 years ago, just for a trip to Mexico, but took it as a preventative for Mont. Revenge (which I did not get! at least that time)

With your feedback I'll definitely to cut it up.  I don't need to be any more stoned than I am!

I take 1/2 an immodium when I need things to calm down, like when I'll be running a meeting or flying or something like that. If I take a whole one I pay later. But I do that too when I must. Docs never suggested anything else.
