I have been on Rowasa for about 5 months and have seem minimum change... still blood once a week or maybe once everother week.  I just switched to Cortenema last night and discovered even MORE blood this morning.  Typically how long do the cortenemas take to kick in?  I am just hoping I'm doing the right thing by stopping the Rowasa and doing the Cortenema.  My doctor said he wanted me to stay on Rowasa b/c where I am now is the best I will ever be.  I disagree... I was able to get into remission 4 years ago using cortenema and asacol.  Opinions please?  Thank you so much.
Current Meds:
4 Lialda daily
Rowasa nightly

Past experience with UC meds does not mean future positive experiences with UC meds. Sometimes the meds that once worked to help us, fail us. I don't know how your doctor could predict your future but changing enemas might be the trick to get you in remission. I would take his advice and try the steroid ones.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

Is blood once every week or every two weeks that bad especially if it's a small dot or two? of course I realize there should be no blood at all but this seems to be very minor bleeding. I recently switched from asaocl to lialda and also take rowasa's too...i have been in a flair for about a week and a half and up'd the rowasa to every night and finally the stripped blood on my stool hs gone down to a few small dots on the stool and the pain is subsiding as well. The sad part is I was doing so well for the last 2 months and hadn't felt that good in a long while...funny everytime I get back to feeling 100% and with 100% normal stool, I'll then back off the rowasa to every third- fourth night and with some nice doses of heavy stress I'm in a mini flair...I havn't had a major flair (than the Lord) since I went on both asacol/lialda and rowasa, but every 2 months or so I get a mini flair under the conditions I've described above. I'm hoping (and praying) I can stay in remission much  longer than two month if I keep up the rowasa to every or every other night and try to keep the stress dpown by not letting things get to me so much. This disease is not a good one for anyone, but for those of us that are sensitive folks and take things to heart, it can really make things much worse. Stress or worry may not be the cause of this darn disease but it sure as hell makes me flair.
