All this food talk has got me thinking about my stomach.  I have a lot of aches and stabbing pains in my stomach.  I take at least six pepcids some days.  I have brought this up to GI several times always expecting him to give me an rx, but he refuses.  He maintains that my UC is causing my stomach pain and that once we get UC under control the pain will subside.  He says I should continue to take otc meds even though I told him I often end up taking more than the  maximum two a day.

I am curious.  Anyway else been told their stomach ache is caused by UC?

-I had an endoscope of stomach in 2005 and it showed nothing except for hiatal hernia.  Also I eat a very healthy diet. I like to eat, but I am not overweight and I exercise whenever UC allows.  Oh, and I hate stomachaches more than anything else.

My PC told me the same thing, although he insists I take the omeprazole, which I have for years. I think you need to monitor your stomach symptoms, though, and maybe get a second opinion if the problems don't resolve.

You can try Zantac and see if it helps your stomach.

Your stomach could be spasming....and yes...low in the rectum inflammation can cause stomach discomfort.

Where exactly is the stomach pain....in the centre between the ribs, under one side of the ribs, across the entire top area of the abdomen..etc?

Are you still using the Rowasa?

He should, however, offer you an antispasmodic such as dicyclomine. It helps immensely.

Do you notice the pain during certain times of the day worse than others?

Would a hiatal hernia cause you that pain?

prilosec has greatly helped me I was having pain where my gall bladder is and had an ultrasound and everything came back fine, so GI told me try try prilosec for two weeks, it took about a week I think to really feel the benefit of it. I have not had pains or heartburn since I started it. I would only get heartburn a couple times a month so that was not a major issue for me.
Beth, 32 ~ hoping to taper pred successfully, wish me luck!

Try taking Prilosec OTC for a week or two and see if the pains subside. If it does, it can be that your stomach is producing too much stomach acid. You don't take your meds on an empty stomach do you? I have been on Prilosec for about a year because I have acid reflux. But once I forgot to take them for a week and talk about PAIN! I think I might have gastritis as well but never had an endoscope.

Hi Everyone.  Thanks for responding.

I take randitine (sp?)  and fanotidine.  I take them before and after meals as needed.  I have seen prilosec, of course,  but have always been turned off by the price.  Of course now that I have recommendations I think I should give them a try.

I actuallly have a variety of stomach pain.  I have sharp pains and also burning pain in midsection where I think my stomach (the organ)  is and also stabbing pains to the right of stomach.  I don't think I have heartburn.  I don't have it everyday either, but I have it for four or five days and then  maybe a week goes by with only a little upset and then it comes back again.  Sorry, probably tmi.

It is absolutely mind boggling to discover that rectal inflamation can cause stomach pain.  I just can't picture it.   Perhaps that is what my gi is referring to when he blames my pain on UC.   I wonder how many others realize this.

I am taking rowasa every few days for now.  I am supposed to back off on them to see if I have reduction in diarrhea.   i do have a rx for levsin for spasms which I have never filled due to side effect of tiredness and dried mouth which sounds horrible to me.  Funny, I never thought my stomach could spasm.

thanks again

Update for anyone else having stomach issues: I have been on Priolsec for four days, and finally success! My stomach feel so much better today and yesterday. What a relief! I couldn't even think straight from the pain and now I feel like dancing!

I think I might still need to try that anti-spasmotic though.

thank you!

That's interesting, madabs.

At this point, my skeptic meter goes off any time my doctor says something is caused by the uc and once the uc is under control everything will be better. He's been wrong more often than he's been right.

Quincy, I take rowasa about every 3 nights.  Doc kind of left me in charge of them.  I take 12 asacol a day and he thought another 4g of mesalamine might be contributing to my recent increase in diarrhea so he just recommended I not take them every night.  I still have abdominal pain even though stomach pain is so much better now.  I actually had hunger pains today and loved every one of them.

Seconder, I must say that I am unsettled by GI's reluctance to treat my stomach problems.  I honestly believe he is earnest in his desire to help me, but he is not especially sensitive to my discomfort. I may even go behind his back to my GP.  I can't see the significance of whether my pain is caused by uc or not, the main issue should be to relieve the pain.

Fatboyslim, I think the rx you take is prevacid.  My seven year old takes it and it requires a prescription.  Good to know it is helping you as I may bypass my gi to get some from family doc.    Did any of your docs blame uc for your stomach issues.

That's great that you are starting to feel better. I contribute my stomach issues to taking my medications on an empty stomach for many years. Because I never had problems until just recently. Now it looks like I am going to be on a PPI forever it seems :( Ah well, just another pill in the pill organizer! :)
