Dear all, I got thro' my colonoscopy a week ago and got my biopsy yesterday which said I had mild inflammation but no dysplasia or cancer. However, I still have BM's 2-3x/day which are loose. I have gas all day and it smells horrible. I've had foul-smelling gas before, but this is terrible. My diet is mostly oatmeal, boiled veggies, baked salmon, rice and plenty of tea and water. I can decrease the pain from the bloating with 'phazyme' but not by much. Would you know how I could reduce the stench? I think the BM's may improve when the inflammation reduces.
Best to you all!

teacher....what meds are you on at this time? enemas nightly? Still the 9 asacol daily?

Are you still taking the Flora-Q?

If you've been on all the meds and still have the smell...it could be what you ate or you might have something else going on...If you've not been on the meds and just have that smell...you're most definitely flaring.

Yep, there's nothing like that good old barn smell...

You could double up the probiotic if you're not taking a full dosage...as well, add a fibre supplement and of course the meds.

If it's totally out of the norm (flare) for you, maybe it's time to have stool samples done.

Keep us updated..

Hi Quincy,
I'm on all the meds. I may have to increase the flora-q. My colonoscopy last week was to see how bad my current flare was. What would the stool test tell? I had H. pylori last year the same time.

Hi..the stool test would determine if you have any bad "bugaboos".

Considering you're on the meds and have increased symptoms, it could be something that you picked up.

I get horrific gassssss from oatmeal and salmon believe it or not.

Do you have gas all day or after a certain time? I find that I get gas about 6 hours after eating something that causes it for me..almost right on time in specific areas of my gut.

I think you should call the doc and say you want a stool sample kit and get that sent in to make sure you're not dealing with something else.
Considering school is just around the corner....meaning more stress.

Just before I was admitted to hospital before being diagnosed my BMs were really smelly.  I wasn't on any meds then either.  Used to bring matches with me at all times, would be mortified if at someones house and had to go. eyes   Mind you in thinking back the smell was so terrible I really was taking a risk lighting those matches tongue

I found that as I decreased certain medications (like Prednisone) my gas got worse. I would always have really foul smelling gas starting right after dinner, but it didn't really fit to me because I would always have something different to eat. Pasta one night, salmon the next, chicken the next. Never the same thing, but always the same gas. Taking Probiotics helped to reduce the incidence of it though, so maybe that will help.

omg... quincy... oatmeal makes you gassy?
i have been so gassy the last few weeks and its so darn painful.
i had no idea it could be the oatmeal.
ive been eating oatmeal almost every morning and i didnt put 2 and 2 together.

hmm... good to know.
too bad, cuz i like my oatmeal and its so easy to make and then eat.
i really dont feel like standing in the kitchen and making breakfast. bummer.

and funny thing... i guess my toilet escapades are quite smelly as well, but i wouldnt have noticed. i just sit there and read or play sudoku and my hubby walks by and about hits the floor. he always asks what kind of animal died in my gut to make that horrific stench. i was always like "what you talkin 'bout? i dont smell nothin!" hehe
i curl his nose hairs.
steph - 32 - female - UC since 2000

tumeric capsules x3 a day

Steph..when you burn the nose hairs..it's definitely serious..lol!

I gave up oatmeal for breakfast eons ago.

Have it for an evening snack.

I have a boiled egg and toast for breakfast....can last me 6+ hours if necessary.

I love oatmeal...heck, I'm Scottish....oats is in me blood..haha.
Graham flour is horrific as well....and I won't even get into soy bits like in Kashi cereal. I eat any of that stuff only in the evening if I want any.

I hear you about the horrible smell of bms. Mine are not loose though. But yesterday I had to go four times as I was only doing small amounts every time. But it was solid. And very gassy. I didn't eat but one meal all day yesterday other than a half of bowl of cereal for breakfast.

I go through this for about 3 days when it occurs and then things get back to normal. And my gas has been feeling totally different at night, now it feels like this horrible pins and needles sensation in my left side and into the rectal area. And I got up this morning with it feeling this way, and my left side at that area feels really tight.

I have mentioned the tight feeling in my side to him before and he says that is not colon related. And it feels like stinging sensations also. Does anyone else experience this???
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

The odor u smell is most likely putrescine and/or hydrogen sulfide. It it often both are chemical byproducts of anaerobic bacteria (not the good ones) and are somewhat irritating to the lining of the colon. I get "the gas" during onset and offset of flares and whew, they are room clearers! "Come on exhaust fan don't fail me now!" Has been a common chant during flares. If I forget the exhaust fan it creeps into the house and my wife assaults me playfully with a well choreographed air freshner ballet. I'm glad she's so cool about my condition! A good way to clear up gas is to keep a log of your eating habits and avoid the foods that give you gas. As far as the odor, Chlorophyll tabs in the form of shattered cell wall chlorella helps. If you have a juicer juice anything that is green, spinach is the best to help control odor just make sure it doesn't give you more gas. I take chlorophyll in the fall during hunting season to help mask my body scent when in the woods. Hope it helps.

What about trying Gas-X for the gas? I've started taking 2 of them at night because I've learned that it was the gas that was waking me up.  When I go first thing in the morning after a night on the Gas-X it's not as urgent or violent either, I just kinda sit there and wait for things to finish, no straining at all.
