It's a slow digest tablet but often I see them come out whole - given that UC, Chrohn's and IBS sufferers usually have rapid transit or D isn't that kind of defeating the object? My most recent flair (if it is one) is because of D and non obsorption of Asacol. Is Pentasa the same?

Diagnosis: Oct 07 - Non Specific Colitis (possible UC or Chrohn's but biopsy not confirmed by 2 seperate GI's) (Mild inflammation on Rectum, Plus some patchy inflammation on Right side of Colon). 2 small Piles also diagnosed but not clear whether they are bleeding or not.

Medication Still taking: 800mg Mesalazine (Asacol) 3 times a day appear to have stopped working.

Symptoms: Jun 08 - Bleeding returns with diarrhoea after taking meds for stomach ulcer. Sigmoidoscopy in June rules out rectal inflammation, Colonoscopy planned for August. (Doctor hinting it's Piles and IBS). No pain, no other symptoms.

Procedures: 2x Sigmoidoscopy result - all slight non specific inflammation non IBD. 1x Colonoscopy result - mild non specific inflammation on right hand side - IBD not confirmed. 1x OGD result - small ulcer. Barium MRI of stomach and small bowel result - all normal.

Well, some of it must still get digested. I was in a severe flare w/diarrhea 25+ times a day, blood, mucous, etc., and Asacol got me out of it.
Diagnosed with UC March 2007; yet to go into complete remission
Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa every 3-4 nights; Canasa every 3 nights;
Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri 1/day; Chewable multivitamin; Metamucil; Viactiv; Zinc supplement every few days

This may not be the case for you, but my GI told me that even though I was seeing whole tablets, it was actually being absorbed. He said that if you reached in with gloves and examined the pill, you would see a tiny slit in the side where the medicine came out (although he did not recommend doing this!). He also said that what I thought was the pill coming right out after I took it was most likely the pill from the previous dose. Again, don't know if this is the case for you, but that's what I was told.
*Diagnosed 10/07 (6 months pregnant w/ 2nd baby)
*Currently in remission
*Tapering prednisone - at 30 mg
*Lialda (3 x a day)
*Canasa
*Prilosec
*Calcium, multivitamin, Metamucil, iron, fish oil, probiotics

Because your affected area is right-sided, where Pentas dissolve is more likely to target the area better than if it were lower. It still is dispersed throughout th colon, but a high amount would be in the ileum and ascending colon.

Even though I had diarrhea 20 times a day, the Asacol helped quickly...and I was only on 4 a day to start..then upped to 6.   But, I didn't have whole colon involvement....so, some of it was dispursed above the affected area obviously.  I've never seen whole pills in the bowl...even at the worst of flares.   Asacol dissolves depending on the intestinal ph level.....others dissolved depending on the bacteria.  Good thing there are different 5ASA meds available with different delivery systems.

Keep us posted as to how you're getting along with Pentasa....what's the dosage the doc's putting you on?
