Hello All,

I have UC-left sided for last 2years.
I'm taking good food and my apatite is very good.
Still I'm not able to gain weight.. Right mow my weight is 125Lbs and my height is 5'9''..
Could you please suggest me what is the best food for the UCers which won't create any problems and helps in gaining weight.
I feel very bad to be skinny at the age of 30.

Please Please suggest and give your comments

Thanks All in advance..

Hi,

After my ostomy surgery (for UC), I had very watery stool, and kept getting dehydrated, so the ostomy community said to eat "thickening foods".  They were applesauce, mashed potatoes, pasta, bananas, and, oatmeal, and after months of those foods, I blimped right up, way too much, so I now just take immodium when needed, and eat a normal diet.  So basically complex carbs seemed to plump me up.

I would stay away from sugary products, but if your body can tolerate it go for it. Also if your body can tolerate fats go for it as well. Choose steaks or cuts of meat with more fat and eat the skins of chicken too. Definately try the better fats from nuts and avacados.

Maybe try natural peanut butter, adding olive oil and/or flax oil to pastas, salads, etc. Put butter (real butter, not margarine) on lots of foods. Drink whole milk (if you don't have issues with dairy). Good luck.

I drink 2 cans of Ensure Plus (on top of 3 regular meals) everyday to 'maintain' my weight. If I want to gain some weight I guess I have to take at least 1 more can. tongue

I had a friend without lactose issues that added carnation instant breakfasts to milk and drank 2 of them between her regular 3 meals a day as snacks. it was slow but she managed to put on about 5 pounds in a little over a month.

That's the only thing I've heard tried, I've never had the problem personally I'm on the other end at 5'5" and down to 210. . . .I was at 298 so I've been going the oposite direction from you. Hey too bad I can't give you mine so I can lose more and you can gain more *grin*
