Seems reading here that most people lost weight .........I wonder why I did not. Lord knows that would be a nice side effect.

Some Uc'ers have a fast transit period which doesn't allow for some of the nutrients/calories/etc to be absorbed properly. I usually lose weight too quickly when I am in a flare because I have a fast metabolism, always have really. In fact, I get tickled if I gain 5lbs! I usually feel like crap if I lose too much weight and have a total lack of energy; also look like a walking skeleton. So be careful what you wish for! :)

I don't normally lose weight from the D either, I have had it since about March steadily which was just after I stopped nursing my son. The irony is that I was losing weight before that and since the D started I've leveled out and stopped dropping. I had managed to drop 55 pounds from September to February without trying to and nobody but me seemed concerned with it.

It's ok.  I used to lose a lot of weight when I would flare, now I don't.  I think my body hangs onto every nutrient/fat it can because it it is preparing for the diarrhea days.  That's my theory.  I know sometimes people make me feel like "how can you be so sick with stomach issues but yet you're chubby? or comments like "you don't look sick".  I just take a deep breath and move on and eat a candy bar and let it go.  roll

All the colon does is absorb water from stool. So its possible if you are eating the same amount of calories as before you would not lose weight even with D because the only part of the digestive process that gets disturbed by a swollen and ulcerated colon is the part that removes the water. When you have diareha and are sick or eat some bad food this is not the case because the body is just trying to get rid of the food or bacteria as quickly as possible so it's not absorbing nutrients/calories. At least for me, the reason I lose weight is because I don't feel like eating and thus don't get enough calories to keep weight on.

I find I loose weight when I am in my flares, not because of the diarrhea, but because I seem to loose my appetite and don't feel like eating anything. Also, I don't stop my exercise regime when I am flaring so I am still burning the calories.

Dx:  UC Proctitis 2006
Meds:  None so far. Garlic works to ease flares. My GI laughed when I told him and said it was just coincidence.
Started Meds:  Apr 9 08 500mg 5ASA (salofalk) to ease flare, tapering, stopped.
Diet:  Regular fresh garlic, Biobest yogurt daily, Omega 3 supplements, very limited junk food, carbs and processed food, low fat diet.  Lots of fresh fruit and veggies (limited potatoes).
 Added: tumeric and probiotics.

Coindentally, I never lost weight until around the 7th or 8th month with UC. Now I can't keep it on. I swear, if its not one thing its the other. Ergh.

I wondered about my lack of weight loss too from time to time.  I wonder why I am not just wasting away with everything coming out of me so fast and in such great quantities.

I think the reason must be  because I am a militant food eater. I will pretty much eat through anything, lack of appetite, pain, nausea, etc.  I rarely vomit so I keep down what I put in.

For me the worse thing I can do for my body is not eat regularly so I am totally committed to a daily regimen of good quality, nutritional food of many different varieties at least three times a day.  I use a joking tone, but I am serious - I have to eat or I get sicker.

Maybe you are like me and your body doesn't give up a calorie without a fight and after your eight months of diarrhea your body has adjusted and holds onto what it can.    I think also it is probably true that the diarrhea some of us with UC have doesn't rob us of as much calories as the diarrhea that arises from other reasons.

UC diagnosed 10/05, first symptoms 1983
asacol 12/daily and rowasa as needed

At one point I lost a lot of weight and was down to 100lbs (at 5'8"...) because not only was I going to the bathroom constantly, but I wasn't eating very much or things high in calories because it just hurt too much and I was actually afraid to eat. Nowadays I have my appetite back (could be from the Lexapro) and can eat a lot but I have been able to stay around 125/130lbs and not lose or gain too much. I hated being so skinny though because people were always accusing me of being anorexic or especially bulemic since I was running to the bathroom so often... And of course you say I am NOT bulemic, and they say "I watched this special on lifetime and they said that people with eating disorders are also really good liars" rolleyes

me either. i used to weigh 125 about 4 years ago...then got pregnant (no uc symptoms) and lost a bit of weight after the baby but now cant loose a darn pound. now at 175 it is so frusterating. I think my body and matabolism is in starvation mode....it holds on to every calorie because it knows i am going to poop it out soon. I have increase my excercise program 3 fold and nothing!!! I dont know what to do, i hate my body and i hate my disease. I want my body back ...you would think that with UC that it would be easy to loose weight. ugh
