I am running a fever of 100-101 for a few days I am taking flagyl and tapering off Prednisone. My GI seemed to be concerned about it. Does anyone else deal with this?
Prednisone 30 mg a day (can't wait to see goodbye to this)
Asacol 400mg 4 pills 3 times a day

Yes.

An infectious disease specialist explained this to me the last time I was in the hospital: Apparently, as your colon becomes inflamed, the walls of the colon weaken. The various bacteria, both good and bad, that are in your gut are then able to work their way out of the GI tract and into the body. Your temperature then rises in an attempt to kill the renegade bacteria.

At least that's the way I understood it.

Also, he said I was told wrong when another health care person (I think it was a nurse) told me that dehydration can cause these fevers.

I had a fever of 100 before we made the last change in my meds to the cort enema.  It's how I finally decided I needed to change something.  Sure enough, my blood work showed slightly elevated white blood cells.

When I began the rowasa, I cut my asacol by 3 tabs a day, which was too fast.  The rowasa never seemed to bring a lot of relief but if I can get back in control, I'll try it again.

The cort enema worked within two days, I'd say 50% improvement of symptoms (no blood, 5 "d" trips a day) but after 10 days now I'm just about back to where I was (a little frustrated).  I'm going to stick with the cort enema for awhile though to see if I can avoid a regular pred therapy.

Ideally, if the asacol starts working again, I'm hoping for a maintenance rowasa regime.

Keep an eye on your fever. If it stays longer at a higher temp, it could very well be some sort of virus. Low grade fever is common in Uc but a fever of over 100 can indicate something else. Are you taking something to keep it down? Do you have any other signs of infections?

Socalsd,

Sorry you're feeling so crappy (pun intended) I will pray you get better asap (and you will).

I remember when I checked myself into the hospital beause I knew it would be the only way I would get some fresh opinions and get the urgent care I needed; maybe while you're there you can get a fresh scope too. Perhaps you may be a good canidate for remicade which at the very least is a drug that is actually addressing the issue with all the extra TNF protiens our bodies are making vs pred etc which just mask the issues with temp relief.

I am getting to the point where I think of having surgery more and more as it's truly a cure and we as UC'ers are blessed to have that option.

My nurse at my gastro doctor's office asked me yesterday if I had fever. I told her no. But this evening I did, 99.1. But I have had a sinus type headache for two days now and stuffiness. But I have also noticed problems with a pinkish type rectal discharge over the past couple of days. Since Sunday I have had 11 bm's, 5 of them Sunday. But no diarrhea, very solid. And boy is my rectal area sore after that many bathroom trips. Only when I have mainly gas do I notice the weird discharge. Sometimes it is brownish.

What can I do to get rid of the rectal throbbing? I take Tylenol as I do not take ibuprofen, aspirin, or Aleve. They can eat up your gut. If I can get back to just going once a day or every other day I probably will heal up down there.

Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

I am going to ask for one when I go back. I used to have to use Levsin when I was having the flares with the diarrhea. I do not recall ever having a fever either. I had a complete blood workup about 3 weeks ago and it all showed normal, including the WBC. I do not think it would have changed this fast. I do not really feel that bad, my rectal area is just irritated.

Yes, the last time I had a fever over 100 I ended up in the hospital. I don't think it was any coincidence that I was flaring too at the same time. Only took a few days, but all energy was zapped from me and the flares made me so dehydrated. The day I met my new GI doctor (my other one had retired) he took one look at me and asked I was opposed to going into the hospital. Best decision ever. Fluids, IV, and lots of meds got be back on my feet. I don't think I had it in my body to fight it on my own.

Hope you've been able to get over the fever and are feeling better.
Diagnosed UC - 1993

Current Meds:
6-MP - 50 mg one night 75 Mgs the next
Colazal (3 pills three times a day)

Socalsd - I've taken flagyl a couple of times, once for giardia, once for a c diff infection and it absolutely made me feel like crap! The nausea, metallic taste in my mouth, tiredness, fever, diarhea and dehydration were almost worse than the infection. It knocked out the giardia with two courses, but after two courses of increasing dosages and no progress on the c diff, my doc switched me to Vanco. I don't think you mentioned why you were taking flagyl, but it can certainly make you feel crappy.  Taking it with prednisone would almost be too much for me.  Definitely talk with your doc about this.  I hate it when the cure is worse than the disease!

I get fevers often.

Usually while flaring I run around a 99. On pred I had hot flashes where my actual temp would spike to about 102 for a short time. Since starting remicade I have had a fever twice over 100 but they didn't last more than a day. I have always assumed it was due to inflamation.
Kelly, 30, suburbs of Chicago, IL
