Hi all.  In the spring of '02, lived in a small town.  My GP had moved on, so was seeing one of the new MDS in town.  Went to her with concerns of excessive bloody stools, D and horrible stomach pains.  First suggested 'roids.  Then did bunch of tests.  She suggested I eat a bland diet with legumes and brown rice.  After 2 months, nothing changed.  I went back to her, with pretty much the same results.  Decided since I was moving, I would suffer through and get a new GP once the move was done.  Went to her in Sept. '02.  Immediately was sent to GI and subsequently had my first colonoscopy.  During this time, I was in massive amounts of abdominal pain, and couldn't leave my home for fear of not being near a toilet.  Diagnosed with UC, I was put on Sulfasalazine 500mg x 3 a day, as well as Entocort enemas.  Finally got it under control.  Had a major flare in '06 and ended up on Entocort again and then prednisone (which totally sucked).  Am having a minor flare right now.  I have been hearing about pro-biotics etc.  and was wondering if anyone could suggest what has worked for them?

Heat really makes it worse, as well as stress!  I also have discovered that too much dairy aggrevates it, as well as greasy foods.  I have been told that different things affect each individual, so I was just wondering what bothers others?

Hi and Welcome! Probiotics put good bacteria in our systems. I take Acidophilus Pearls and have a lot of luck w/ those. You may want to do a search at the top of the page on probiotics. There are been lots of discussions on these. You should find some great information.

Food is definitely an individual thing. I have IBS in addition to UC. Basically that means if I eat a food I shouldn't (for me dairy, fried) then I am immediately in the bathroom 2-3 times. Otherwise I'm lucky and can generally eat what I want in moderation.
Tabitha (Tab)

100mg Azathioprine, 2 Fibercon, Colazal-9 a day, Acidopholis Pearls, Zegerid (not sure if it is working)

Welcome!

I have problems with the heat and my bowels as well. I have for as long as I can remember - long before my UC dx. Now I live in SETX - where it's been super hot lately! Sigh.

I have good luck with probiotics as well. I'm using Pro-Bio right now. I have also used Culturelle. I am considering trying Primodophilus Reuteri; however, it requires refridgeration and I'm afraid I'll forget to take it if it isn't with the rest of my pills. They do have a "pearl" version which doesn't need refridgeration - maybe I'll try that.

When I thought about it, I've always had troubles with heat and especially stomach cramps, way before my UC dx too.  I always thought it was related to dehydration, with both sweating and D going on.  I've been fortunate to never have passed out.
