I would be asking my GI why he was prescribing it. Doctors should be prescribing antibiotics only when absolutely needed. Especially if you're in remission and don't have an infection that warrants antibiotics, I would not want to take them....especially not Cipro, which the FDA just issued a black box warning for.

Diagnosed with UC March 2007; Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa weekly; Canasa weekly; Viactiv; Metamucil wafers; multivitamin

I would definitely question your doctor about that. He should only be prescribing it if you have some sort of infection. Antibiotics will kill off the good and bad bacteria, and killing good bacteria could instigate your symptoms.

Did he say what? It seems as if he's using you as an experiment since you're in remission. Sometimes GIs may prescribe antibiotics (such as Rifaximin) to see if that will help a FLARE, but never while a patient is in remission.

I would also say check into why you need the anti-biotics before you start taking them.  My GI highly recommends not taking one unless absolutely needed.  I've had them throw me into flares before.
Dx: Pancolitis for 12 years
Meds: Asacol (400mg x12 daily)
         Fish Oil
         Culturelle x2 daily
