During the recent couple weeks I was starting to go extreamly down hill with my treatment. Yesterday my doctor pulled me off my Lialda and is keeping me on Pred @60mg/day. Yesterday and today I almost feel like a completely new person. 3 Semi-formed BM a day instead of 8-10 bloody and mucus laden ones. Is it safe to say that I may be allergic to 5ASAs?

I would say I'm allergic to anything containing Mesalamine. When I tried Lialda it worked well for 2 weeks then I broke out in a rash and my symptoms became so much worse. Tried Colazal and Asacol and it felt like had eaten razor blades, symptoms were so bad. After that I swore off Rx meds.
31 yr old female, currently pregnant.
Diagnosed 2/29/08 with Mild Universal UC
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free
Lialda Colazal & Asacol made symptoms worse, MUCH worse
Not taking any more meds for now. Trying a holistic approach.

Hmmm...I initially improved when I was on Lialda and things just went really down hill about a week and a half in.

It isn't an allergy so much as an intolerance. I'm unable to use Asacol, Lialda or Rowasa because mesalamine makes my symptoms much worse. I am able to take Colazal, as are numerous others who can't take mesalamine. If you can't tolerate Colazal either, most GI's go to the immunosuppressants - azathioprine or 6-MP next.

Just a quick update,

The new GI doctor at Mass General Hospital seemed like he geniunely took an intrest in getting me back to 100%. He took a very detailed medical history on me and pretty much laid it all out on the table so to speak. The first goal of treatment is to ween me off the predinose and get me into remission.  Starting this week were are tapering off my prednisone dosage at 10mg per week. He also wants me to reintroduce the Lialda back into my system now that i'm having consistantly formed stools and almost no urgency. Hopefully it turns out well and I can experience this wonderful thing called remission. :-)

Last night was terrible as I was on the toliet most of the night. The only thing that changed was me taking the Lialda again.

Hi...you mean the doc put you on a 4800mg again?

Seems it's a high dosage to start....call him back and discuss the lowest dosage you can start on and then increase from there....
