For the past two weeks or more I have been losing hair like never before!  Thank goodness I have thick hair, but this is getting crazy.  Every day I am cleaning out gobs of hair from the drain in the shower and then more falls out when I blow dry my hair.  I'm constantly picking hairs off my clothes.  I find hairs on my sheets - which has never happened to this extent before.

I've been off of the pred for a month.  Could the remi be causing this?

I started using Nioxin again and will be digging out my Biotin to help my hair grow back faster.

Ideas?  Thoughts?

I take Pentasa and my doc has me doing rogaine to stop the loss for awhile. He said that despite popular belief I would not need to take it for life.
26 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

It's likely fallout (literal & figurative) from the Pred + Flagyl. Takes a while for them to work ALL their magic. (I'm being sarcastic.) No foolin' ... I had very thick hair before I had to take any of our usual UC meds . From my experience, they all cause hair loss, even the 5-ASAs. We just notice it to varying degrees & at different stages of our flare/healing/remission cycles. Let us know how the biotin works; best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... I hear ya sister!  I also lose a ton of hair what seems like constantly.  Heaven forbid I wear my hair pulled back all day, then when I take it down at night I get fistfuls of it coming out!  Though I've had UC for so long and also been on asacol along with it, I swear I can remember having much much thicker hair before it all (just like my siblings have today!).  My docs did tell me the 5ASAs play a part in that b/c at first I was worried I wasn't absorbing enough nutrients or something.  Though lately I had switched my normal multi to a prenatal one and it happened to help my hair grow more quickly.

I guess I have no new answers to it... I just wanted to say I sympathize with you big time!

Asacol was the culprit for me also. I had been on it for at least a year before I started having problems. Switched to Colazal and it stopped. I was on Azathioprine for less than nine months but during that time it did some evil things to my hair. It became very coarse and curly. Hope things turn around for you soon.

Hugs to you, hair loss seems to hit emotional nerves more than other drug side effects. I've been losing a lot lately too, and I'm hoping and praying I don't lose it all. Its starting to be noticeable but I've been in a bit of denial in that I haven't shopped for hats or scarves or wigs - the idea of it depresses me. I don't know what is causing the hair loss so I don't know what to change to stop it. A friend said you can lose your hair about 3 months after a traumatic illness - the timing would be right for me as it has been 3 months since I was in the hospital for UC. When I was in the hospital I had intravenous steroids and 2 antibiotics then 2 antibiotics when I first got home. Maybe all the toxicness of the antiobiotics had a delayed effect somehow as old hat suggests? I would think that if it was the prednisone it would have happened when I was on high doses instead of now when I've tapered down pretty low? It could be the 6-mp which I've been on for about 3 months but only recently went up to 100mg. I guess it could be the asacol but that would surprise me since I've been taking it for years with no hair loss before. It could be nutritional deficiencies. It could be low thyroid function, something I suspect I am experiencing but haven't been treated for yet (my doctor says wait til I'm off prednisone to see how I am then before considering thyroid meds). Maybe its a combination of some of these things, I've never had this whole combo of meds and conditions before. I recently started taking biotin but haven't seen any reduction of hair loss so far. Do you need a prescription for Rogaine or Nioxin?

I vote for the Asacol and just UC in general as the cause of your hair loss. I've taken anywhere from 4-12 Asacol/day over the past 10 years and only started losing larger than normal amounts of hair after starting it. It says on the side effects sheet that hair loss is possible.

I try to eat as well as possible (not so easy with UC) to keep up those nutrients. I can actually tell by HOW much hair I lose per day or per week just how healthy me and my gut are. The better I feel the lower my Asacol dose the less hair I lose.

Sorry for not having a suggestion for keeping those little hairs where they belong, though.

Cheers,
Elizabeth

I have ulcerative colitis and been on pentasa for a few months now, and im starting to lose hair in the frontal lobe area and i don't want to lose hair and want it to grow back so i decided to stop taking them, my question is, is the lost of hair permanent and never growing back?? because doctor never told me about hair lost side effects if i would have known i would have refused to take such pills, please let me know if its permanent hair lost, and im getting pimples all over my forehead too which is sickening to see.

I have been losing hair, what I would consider a lot but this morning in the shower I was alarmed at the amount coming out. Very upsetting. I've always had loads of hair I can't imagine however that at the rate it's falling out I'll have much for long. ;-(

The REMICADE, from my experience, causes the hair loss. I find my hair everywhere. My friends are always picking it off of me.

I had this happen to me because of prednisone. No worries if that is the same case with ya then your hair will grow back.

I know the hair loss isn't permanent. I've had it happen before - just not for this long. I was in the hospital on solumedrol and flagyl in April. Maybe it's everything building up?!!? (IV meds + Remicade + 5ASAs + Imuran) I find it really irritating to constantly be finding hairs all over and having them tickle or cause itchiness.

Although while I was on the steroids (IV and oral) I found that my hair didn't grow for about a month - I didn't have to shave for about two weeks! That was nice... So perhaps it's payback time?

Now I've got a bum tooth that's causing super amounts of pain and the dentist gave me penicillin. Everything seems to happen at once for me!

Thanks for all of your ideas, thoughts, and understanding :) I am curious about the Rogaine and will have to investigate that more to see if it would be worth it for me.

I kept losing hair for months after being off the prednisone.  But don't lose hope!  My hair is growing back just as thick as before.  I have to wear headbands to press down the short pieces in front that stick up strangely, but I don't mind since it means I am getting healthy again.  Hang in there, it really does grow back.

I am also losing a lot of hair right now, and I have read from two different sources that you can have a lot of hair loss three to four months after an illness.  Sounds like that is about your time table when in the hospital.  I have been losing hair for about six weeks now, but it is starting to taper off.  Hopefully yours will, too, after a few weeks.

DONT WORRY. I was in your situation about 1 month ago. On pred started azathioprine had tapered down to 10mg pred and then the hair started falling out. Did not know what the culprit was. I was losing so much every day I strated looking at wigs my husband who usually says I exaggerate everything and did this time too until I run my fingers through my hair and then showed him the handful which had fallen out. He was shocked, I immediately burst out crying.

I was so stressed about it, doctors didn't care. However my hairdresser recommended a shampoo kerastase (sp?) the one to minimise hair loss and I started taking biotin. At this point I had been losing hair for a couple of months and my hairdresser could feel that I had lost a lot of hair, my hair was very thin although she said there were no bald patches and that I had lost hair all over.

Anyway started taking biotin and using the new shampoo and the hair loss drastically reduced. Now I hardly have any hair loss it is so good to not worry when I am combing my hair and only to see a couple of hairs on my comb rather than about 50!!!

When my hairdresser came back 8 weeks later she said I had loads of new hair growth which I can actually see, hairs about 1 inch long. And she said my hair felt thicker, now I feel it is pretty much back to normal apart from little hairs which stick out at the side but I can handle that, nothing a bit of hair product doesn't fix.

Unsure whether shampoo and biotin worked or if just due to the hair cycle the hair loss stopped but worth a try anyway.

smhair  I'm losing more hair than my husband! But my hair loss is from taking Mercaptopurine. My doctor recently took me off it after a sgmoid colonoscopy that looked great! But right after that, I started having pain and some bloody stools right as my period waqs about to start. Once it started however, it cleared up. Are there any other women out there with this monthly problem?

Miss Q - it is well documented that even "normal" women have bowel issues around their periods. It seem to affect us with UC even a bit more. There are a few posts about it, if you care to search through old posts.

BTW - Welcome to HealingWell! Glad to have you :) May I suggest starting a thread to introduce yourself? We'd love to know more about you.

You can get Biotin at most pharmacy or vitamin stores. It is a B vitamin - so you don't need a prescription for it.

How much biotin do you take if you are losing lots of hair?  I can't for sure pinpoint the culprit for my hair coming out, lots of possibilities, but I do want to slow it or stop it.  I started taking 2 biotin pills a day a few weeks ago, I think each pill is 1000 mcg.

- female 41, diagnosed ulcerative colitis Feb 2005
- currently 10mg prednisone (tapering down from 80mg), 100 mg 6-MP/mercaptopurine/purinethol, asacol/mesalamine 4800mg (4 pills x 3 times day), 1 Canasa 1000mg nightly
- VSL#3, Benefiber, multivitamin, chewable calcium, fish oil, biotin, sometimes iron pills
