Just to throw this out there.  I was on the Adkins Diet for about two weeks prior to developing my first symptoms of UC back in 1998.  When I mentioned this to my GI in the hospital...because that is where I wound up...he didn't think it had any correlation.  Well, I DO!  It is a very unhealthy diet to stick to.  No carbs, all protein...what a dum dum I was.  Sure I lost weight...and plenty of it...but oy..what a way to lose it!  Oh well, damage was done...now suffering for ten years with this.

Is that anything like the 'Atkins' diet? :)

I can't think that your low carb diet triggered your UC, especially since you were only on it for 2 weeks when you first noticed UC symptoms. For me, it was generally a low carb (lots of veggies, meat/fish/poultry), antifungal diet (eliminating grains and sugar for a period of time) that helped me get well again; now no symptoms, no meds. I don't advocate the Atkins diet, either. I do think it is too strict. There are better, and easier ways to lose weight, and get healthy again.

Something to consider though, if you can remember that far back, is whether you were on any antibiotics, or birth control pills before your symptoms appeared. Both can be responsible for a fungus/yeast overgrowth.

A diet very similar to Atkins is used my many people for the control of SCD symptoms - it's the Specific Carbohydrate diet and seeks to greatly reduce or eliminate carb intake. I dont think Atkins caused your UC.

You're right...Atkins diet.  The GI doctor didn't think there was any relationship to my onset of UC and the diet either...could have been just coincidence, but I thought it was strange.  No, I wasn't on birth control pills or any antibiotics at the time.

You wouldn't have to be on antibiotics during the time your symptoms appeared to have a yeast/fungal problem. If you took antibiotics at any time during your life, you could have a yeast/fungus problem They are mycotoxins (fungal poisons). Killing all the bacteria in your body, the good along with the bad, allows yeast to proliferate; sometimes taking many years before it manifests as a health problem, like UC. Low carb diets, like the SCD, may help because you are starving the yeast/fungus in your body. Fungus thrives on carbs (grains and sugar). What have you tried to get your symptoms under control?
