Last week I went for a check-up with my ob/gyn and when I mentioned that hubby and I would like to "try" later on this year the doc told me that I might need an MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) booster again before becoming preggo.  They took blood to test my immunity for it and if it is gone then he will want me to get the shot.  My question is - have you gotten an immunization like that with UC?

The oversimplified logic in my brain says: you take immunosuppresants all day + you get a vaccination = maybe not a good idea?

I asked the ob if that was dangerous and he very quickly said not to worry about it. Today I happen to have an appt with my GI anyways and will consult with him on it - but I just wondered if anyone else out there has had a vaccination like this, I haven't had any since being diagnosed forever ago.

Thanks!

I was told you cannot get "live" vaccinations if you're on immunosuppressants. The only vaccine I've received is a tetanus booster (which REALLY hurt!!!) I'm not sure if the MMR is live but I'm thinking it's not.

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) diagnosed at age 15; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use.

Current Meds:
Lexapro 10mg
Trying out Lialda, 2 pills/day

I got the German measles one before I started trying. I have a relatively minor case of UC and was only on Rowasa enemas at the time, but I had no effects. Hope this helps and good luck trying! My biggest advice is STAY ON YOUR MEDS while pregnant. I had a horrible flare last time around because I went off them. This time I stayed on, am 7 months pregnant and am just starting to flare a tiny bit.....
Diagnosed:
Officially Diagnosed with UC in June 2003.  Have had stomach issues since 1989.  Unknown if they are related or not.  Have mild/moderate UC.  Have had 4 flares, the last one caused by hormones from stopping breastfeeding.  Currently back in remission!  Only taking 6 Asacol a day.   Will take Rowasa enemas as needed. Colozal did not work for me.  Luckily my UC is relatively minor and responds well to meds, but man do those flares hurt!

Yeah, it contains live virus. Personally I would skip it, and probably laugh at the person recommending it to me.

LANCET (April 29, 1995) Showed people who got Measles vaccine (MMR) 2 ½ more likely to develop Ulcerative Colitis, and 3 times more likely to develop Crohn’s vs. the unvaccinated.

Here's link for the MMR ingredients, will be the MMR II. Best to make an educated decision. http://www.vaccinesafety.edu/components-MMR.htm

It's definitely best to be an informed consumer.

And personally, if I thought there were any chance whatsoever that I could catch rubella while pregnant, I'd definitely take the suspected but totally unproven risk over the proven chance of having a baby with severe birth defects.

We all have to make our own choices, and that's why it's so important to be informed.

DEFINITELY get the shot. Even if you had German Measles when you were child, your immunisation would have worn off.

You CANNOT get pregnant within 3 months of having the shot...make sure you do not!!!

I've had tetanus, flu, pneumonia immunisation shots as well as different surgeries while on my meds.

You cannot ever guarantee a pregnancy, but there are risks you can at least lessen.

Thank you all so much for you help!  So far my blood tests came back showing that my immunity for MMR it is down and I do need the shot.  Also my GI seemed to gawk at me even asking the question about a shot being appropriate!?  Not sure about him sometimes, he's got a bit of a clinincal bedside manner.  However I am taking in everything you all told me and I'm also doing some more digging on my own.  Thanks again for the help through this (scary) stuff!
