You're probably referring to Bentyl, also known as dicyclomine. Its an anti-spasm medicine. I take it with Tylenol, and it basically mellows you out. I have a feeling its a muscle relaxer. It doesn't help much when I'm flaring hard, but I take it if I'm going somewhere like a dinner party or baseball game or something... just to try to prevent as much trouble as I can.

Back in the day when I was first Dx'd, I was having AWFUL cramps and was given Bentyl to take one per day. For me they helped a bit but gave me a terrible headache so I took them only rarely. BUT, one night around 10:00 the cramps got so bad I couldn't stand, sit or lay down, and I was in so much pain I could barely breath. My husband called my GI, who gave me instructions on taking an increased dose of Bentyl. He said if the pain didn't subside even a bit within an hour to then go to the ER. I took the dose he suggested, waiting it out and about 25 mins. later the cramps abated enough to allow me to get to sleep.

You may need to REALLY impress upon your doctor just how much pain you are in, how debilitating it is, and how it's affecting your day-to-day life.

Good luck, I know it stinks!

I was also taking Colazal and I kept telling the Dr's that I felt it was the Colazal. I had a flare in 2007 and the Dr put me on colazal after I got out of the hospital. I was taking prednisone to ease the flare and it was helping no blood just some D. After I started on the Colazal I noticed I started hurting and was having blood in my BM. I told him this and he said it wasn't the Colazal. This went on for two weeks so I quit the med myself, the cramping and beeding stopped. I was fine until June of this month and started haveing a really bad flare so I went to see Dr he gave me Prednisone again and told me to continue the colazal. I hadn't been taking it so I resarted it. Two weeks later I was admitted to our local hospital stayed there 1 1/2 weeks not getting any better. This was the sickest I have ever been lost 35 lbs. I told that DR. two times I felt the Colazal was making it worse and he siad it wasn't the med it was my colon spasming. They sent me home feeling no better but I continued on the Colazal because he told me it was because I hadn't been taking it is the reason I had the flare.. I went to my Family DR 5 days later and asked him to send me to another specialist in a bigger town and I told him I needed to go today. This Dr. admitted me on the spot. I was so sick. They put me on TPN nothing orally except the Colazal. I was afraid to move because i'd have to go to the bathroom. I began to call the bathroom the torture chamber. My bladder was even hurting and I was having a hard time urinating. There were two days where I didn't take the colazal because I had a colonoscopy and I noticed the cramping and bleeding lessened. I told the new DR. and he also said it wasn't the colazal. I was started on Remicade and also Diagnosed with Crohn's. 1 1/2 weeks and I'm still showing no signs of improvement. I started refusing the colazal and in two days Cramping is almost tollerable without pain meds. 3 days almost no blood, 4 days stop TPN,  5 days they are talking about letting me go home if I can tollerate eating. I've been home for a week still no blood and the cramping is very mild. I really feel the Colazal was making me worse. It didn't cause that flare but I feel it irritated it badly. Others have no problems with it. Sorry this was so long but I wanted to share my experience with the med.

Jsanders, how many Colazal are you taking per day? I was told to take 9/day (3 capsules 3x) and it caused horrible cramping. I cut down to 6/day (2 capsules 3x) and the cramps went away.

correction it is bentyl. u are right kiss 520. thanks for the story TJ1 sometimes i think Dr's care more about the medications than the patients. its so frustrating and im sorry you are going through all that. right now, i am at 8 colozal a day ComedyDork. but my dr. told me to keep taking them but im not going to for a couple days to see if the cramping subsides. sometimes u have to put the foot down if u think its harming u. but who knows maybe i will get on a lower dosage or realize that it wasn't the colozal at all. Thanks for the story elizabeth hopefully i will have some success with it

If you're talking about Bentyl, it did absolutely nothing for me when I was at my worst. Haven't tried it since then. I hope you feel better soon. I wanted some real pain killers too when I was in horrible pain right when I got UC, but the doctors wouldn't give me anything.
Diagnosed with UC March 2007; Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa weekly; Canasa weekly; Viactiv; Metamucil wafers; multivitamin
