Been flaring for 6 weeks and on 40 mg prednisone which is not really controlling it. I came across an article in Reader's Digest that stated VSL #3 "in double-blind, placebo-controlled trials... effectively treated ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome." Wondered if anyone out there has had success with it and if I should wait til the flare stops before I try taking 9 billion pro-biotics a day! I don't want to make things worse, so...

I got the prescription strength VSL#3DS and all it does is give me horrible gas and bloating. I have only been on it for like a week, but nothing to write home about yet. And it is VERY expensive.

I'm about to try it shortly - I have heard people it's helped and the fact that so many people take probiotics would indicate it has potential. I think it contains 450 billion bacteria in 9 strains where as the strongest stuff I can buy normally is 10 billion per capsule.

I'm trying it along with my normal pro-b, Florastor. For me, it isn't the number of bacteria as it is the variety of the bacteria...the more the merrier. VSL started helping when I upped my intake to 3 capsules a day, but there is no way that I can afford to take more than that. VSL3 is expensive!!!!

Just for clarification - has anyone started taking it during a flare? I'm afraid that many probiotics might create more bathroom activity and I'm thrilled to be down to about 5 bathroom trips a day. Just wondered if I should wait until the prednisone has gotten it more under control. Thoughts?

I just started it a week ago, and I've been flaring since I stopped taking Asacol at the beginning of July. I didn't notice anything at first, but the last couple of days I've been going alot less, things have been somewhat formed, less bloody. It would probably be safe to try it now, get the initial gassy bloated reaction out of the way. The thing about starting something new while on Prednisone is that you can't be sure what is helping more, the new stuff or the Prednisone.
