Just curious to see how everyone else is being prescribed the lovely prednisone. For this flare my doc started me on 30mg for a week, to go down to 20mg for a week, then 15mg for a week, then 10mg for a week, then 5mg for a week..Then hopefully don't need it.

When I saw an endocrinologist about tapering off prednisone, he said the last 7.5 mg should be done VERY SLOWLY. He actually told me to do 7.5 for 3 weeks, then 5 mg for 3 weeks, then 2.5 mg for 3 weeks, then 1 mg for 2 - 3 weeks. He said the withdrawl is more manageable that way. When I did it that slowly, I definitely had less joint pain.

Michael (son) starts at 40 and has to taper 2.5 mg at a time or he'll start flaring again.

My course was 7 weeks, one week at a high dose, then 6 weeks to
taper off.
I was on 40mg a day for 7 days, during that first week, I went from
being in hospital with a major flare to being at home with no symptoms
at all, it was like a miracle cure.
I then dropped to 30mgs for 7 days, then 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5.  I've
just started the week at 2.5mgs a day and so far so good, my symptoms
have completely gone, and bowels are completely normal.
I have only experience one side effect, and that was a few spots on
my face which started when I dropped to 10 mgs, they were pretty
bad for about a week, but have almost completley gone now.
Everyone is different, and I've read lots of horror stories of bad side
effects, but for me the whole Pred experience has been great, although
I'll be glad to get off  them, as I hear long term they can be pretty hard
on your body.

I've ALWAYS been started at 40mg for the first 2 weeks straight, after 2 weeks I then tapper down 5mg each week until I hit the last 2 weeks, then I'm instructed to tapper half a mg each week (so 2 pills/day for a week then 1 and a half pills the next week then 1 pill/day then finally the last week I take 1/2 a pill) my GI's have always been insistant of tappering very slowly and starting high enough for long enough to get real effectiveness...unfortunately pred no longer does anything...I never really experianced much in the way of side effects other than racing mind which interferes with sleep at night so I've always taken it very early first thing in the am.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)
