Hi  all,   Just read recently in the paper that now they think that viruses that you may have gotten long, even years ago, could be the cause for many illness  INCLUDING   UC.  They mentioned salmonela for one,  and it hit me that my son had salmonela as a kid due to a sick pet turtle we had.  He was the only one who got sick at the time, and is the only one that now has pancolitis.
That was 39 years ago and he got colitis at 34.  Now it has me wondering.  It also mentioned other ailments that may have had it's roots long ago by a virus that is still lurking in our systems.
It was in the Washington Post and I think it was Sunday's paper, or maybe Mondays, in case anyone wants to look it up.

Was your son on antibiotics at the time? UC may have a fungal etiology, and if your son was ever on antibiotics, (which are fungal metabolites), the overgrowth of yeast that the antibiotics caused could have been brewing for years, as well. Fungus has also been implicated in certain cancers, sinusitis, arthritis, diabetes, high cholesterol........ I believe fungus is often overlooked as a possible culprit in our diseases.

mh53mike- Have you tried an anti-fungal diet,... an experiment to see if your symptoms are from a fungal overgrowth. That was the only thing that helped me get well again after 8 miserable years. Doctors never once suggested or encouraged me to try an anti-fungal approach. I had to figure it out for myself.

I just looked at the article and I'm glad to see them looking into this theory.

I have no idea what the virus or bacteria would have been, but both my husband and I got very sick in 1985 exactly a week after we got home from a trip to Cancun.  I had numerous stool samples which never showed anything.  Our d gradually improved, his more quickly than mine.  I believe that a year or two after that I was diagnosed with IBS, which seems to have flared off and on over the years.

But I still wonder if I first got some virus, bacteria or parasite that was the beginning of this DD.
