I had my monthly specialist check today and finally got some good news. My hemoglobin is above normal! ( after 8 transfusions this is very good news) I'm off everything except a daily dose of imuran. However I notice that I am severely nauseated after eating anything with sugar in it. This will no doubt help me shed those extra steroid pounds by avoiding sugar, but the doctor suggested that this may be a long term side effect of the steroids.. This is my first time with this stupid disease and I don't know what the expect with it. Has anyone else had this side effect? Also, how long until my hair starts to come back? I've been off steroids for 11 days now..

Sorry you've been feeling so ill, Tea.  You hit the nail on the head.  Steroids will create diabetic symptoms in "normal" people for awhile which is why your doctor should be monitoring your blood sugar.  (Actually, your doctor should have prescribed a glucose monitor for you to check your blood sugar everyday.) Now that you've tapered off, your blood sugar should be coming back down to whatever your normal readings were before.  Stay away from food made with sugar and maybe other carbs, too, for awhile.  I imagine that the doctor would do another blood test for blood sugar to see how the level is.

If you do avoid sugar, please, please, please don't replace them with artificial sweeteners especially aspartame or sucralose.
