I am waiting for my asacol to come in from medco.  I just looked up the side effects:
Acne; back or joint pain; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; gas; general feeling of being unwell; hair loss; headache; heartburn; increased sensitivity to sunlight; loss of appetite; mild abdominal discomfort or pain; nausea; runny or stuffy nose; sneezing; vomiting.
Now, I think some of you know me well enough by now.  I try to look at the humerous side and try to keep a positive attitude.  I loved the "hair loss" part - I know where I can get hair you guys - I work for a hair replacement company!  Then I saw loss of appetite - oh goody I'll finish losing the weight I gained from quitting smoking.  Oh abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, runny or stuffy nose sneezing?  Woohoo The best one? vomiting.  Now what more can I ask for?
I hope you all are having a wonderful Sunday - we do have many things to be thankful for!

I've used Asacol for almost 20 hairloss.
Everything has reported side doen't mean we got them. As well, even the placebo has side them.

Gigi - the only way you can find out is by trying it.  I tried other Melasamine - including Rowasa and the side effects finally caught up with me BUT I am doing good and seem to be about 90% in remission - D stopped, bleeding stopped from all I can see - no bad cramping - more like normal!  I just had to stop the medication but that is just me - many here use Asacol and get great results.  I do believe the worse was the sweating and chills and maybe the nausea - cut back on doseage but didn't help but it sure does for some.  Give it a try - don't talk yourself into side effects.  For one thing - you are a LOT younger than I am!

It's true that all drugs have side effects. Here are some commonly used drugs.

Side effects of aspirin:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • heartburn
  • hives
  • rash
  • swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • hoarseness
  • fast heartbeat
  • fast breathing
  • cold, clammy skin
  • ringing in the ears
  • loss of hearing
  • GI bleeding

Side effects of Tylenol:

  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • liver damage
  • easy bleeding or bruising
    Side effects of oral contraceptives:
  • weight gain
  • nausea
  • breast tenderness
  • headaches
  • mood changes
  • blood clots
  • We always have to weigh the potential benefits against the potential bad effects.

I participated in the study of this drug before it was made available, and they took note of everything I experienced during that time, even things mostly likely not related to taking the drug, or obviously caused by the disease and not the drug (diarrhea? duh), all which ends up listed as side effects. So take the list with a grain of salt.
I have tons of thick hair and don't think I have any side effects (but after 20 years, what would normal feel like?). I know it worked remarkably well and saved me from surgery back in the 1980's.
49 year old female, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering.
Asacol/5ASA maintenance for 20+ years, usually 3 pills 2x day.
    Currently tapering off presnisone from lingering flare;
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Tested gluten intolerant and started gluten-free, soy-free, etc. diet which resolved flare. Also Replete probiotic, DGL (licorice root, slippery elm), Permeability Factors. Slow-release iron and B-12 shots for severe anemia.

I do have the hair lose but luckily new hair grows back in and I had lots of it to begin with. But so far it keeps me feeling pretty good most of the time so I wouldnt care if I went bald its only hair. And I dont have to take any of the other drugs, that probably have worse side effects. But like they all said everything has side effects. But sometimes the cure can be worse then the disease.

Half of those symptons can be from the UC! I had some heartburn from it, but it's pretty well tolerated by most people. I try to be positive, too, that's why I spell my name this way at healingwell. Merry
