I have noticed in alot of peoples signitures they are listing GERD, heartburn or acid reflux.  I myself have GERD and had it for a couple of years before i was ever diagnosed with UC.  I have been on a daily dose of PPI for awhile, taking nexuim at the moment.

Anyways i kind of my have this consiracy theory going that the two are linked and UC follows long term GERD.  PPI's suppress acid production in the stomch and i believe that some stomach acid is used to regulate your bacteria levels in your intestines.  If you mess with the acids then in turn your bacteria could get out of whack...and create one heck of a vicous cycle...maybe leading to UC?? Just a hunch...i personally think bacteria is the underlying cause of UC.

So how many have GERD? whats your thoughts and expierences with it?

I have GERD. It was dx'd at the same time as my UC. Before then I never took a PPI. An occasional H2 blocker and tums maybe - usually suffered through it, but I don't remember it being as bad then as it is now.

Sometimes the GERD is worse to deal with than the UC! Both durning a UC flare is down right double whammy miserable...
