I can no longer deny that I'm in the early stages of a flare.  I blame antibiotics I needed for an inflammed tooth.  Started with penicillin for a few days then thought I could stop the gurguling that started by switching to a z-pack which I usually have good luck on.  No luck :(  Last antibiotic taken Sept 2 - one week ago.

I'm on the max dose of asacol.  100mg Imuran.  Next Remi infusion Oct 7.  Last flare I wasn't able to tolerate Rowasa - couldn't retain it more than 30 minutes.

I can not deal with pred again.  It makes me not myself and it takes so much for so long to work any more.

I hope the doc can wave the magic wand and that I don't have to be a bad patient and say "no" to what he recommends.

Symptoms:  extreme gas, stinky gas, approx 6 bms per day, no solid poos (although with the obnoxious gas blowing everything apart it's hard to tell), fatigue.  So the symptoms are still bearable, but uncomfortable and I surely don't want to wait for them to get worse.  I've been waiting for them to get better.

Okay - vent over.  I do feel better getting this out to people who understand.  Can't complain to Mom as she is dealing with her mother's hospitalization.  Dad is dealing with his own health issues.  Hubby empathizes but can't really understand since he's "normal".

Rather than the pred, try the cortifoam since you cannot take 5ASA rectals.

Hope the doc will consider them for you.

Good thing you got in quickly...let us know how it goes.

Hate to hear that. Speedy recovery wishes. And I echo the pred note. I am currently back on Pred for my most recent spike and am not happy with it.

Ugh, I was sure Remicade was going to be your magic bullet..... maybe your GI can up your dose & shorten your infusion schedule? then you could try the steroid rectal meds 'til the next infusion. Hhm! Well good luck! I'm sorry to hear this, I really am.

Were you doing well before you started the antibiotics? If you were, then it probably was the antibiotics that screwed things up. Maybe you can ask to get Remi pushed up a week or two? And I would definitely stay away from Pred and start steroid rectal meds!

Things were okay before the antibiotics. They weren't 100% (probably about 90%), but could have possibly gotten to 100% with my next infusion. I hate antibiotics! This whole situation makes me want to cry.

I'm hoping that he recommends steroid e's of some sort. I'll ask about them, but before he hasn't agreed about using them. I do have some cortifoam left from my last flare. Since it is a steroid, I don't want to start that w/o talking to the doc.

Just over 24 hours to wait. I can do it.

If your doc says no to steroid enemas but wants you back on Pred, ask his reasoning. If you were 90% before the antibiotics then maybe your current flare is only rectal and if you were to go on oral steroids now, I would say that is a bit overkill.

Antibiotics are the pits! Did you have a root canal job? Probably Eva Lou's recommendation is the best & will hopefully get you back on track GI-functioning-wise. Best wishes! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Antibiotics are such a pain for us. I had some oral surgery done recently, and I bargained with the surgeon - told him I'd rinse my mouth with the nasty-tasting antibacterial mouthwash three times a day if he would let me skip the Amoxicillin. Fortunately, he agreed.

I saw the doc early this evening. We're both puzzled as to why this is not resolving itself while I am on so many meds. He wants to do a scope - and since it's been over 5 years since my last, I agreed. BUT it's about 5 weeks away.

I did ask about the steroid enemas. He gave me a script for them. Said it wouldn't hurt to try them - but did say that we're not sure where the inflammation is and if it's all over the enemas aren't going to help much. E's won't be in until Friday - and hopefully the pharmacy will be open and not have its employees on the run from Ike. My fingers are crossed for only rectal inflammation - but my "gut" tells me it's more.

I know for a "normal" flare that inflammation usually starts in the rectum. For a flare like this (antibiotic induced), can the inflammation start anywhere???

I wish there would have been an alternative for those dang antibiotics! The pain and inflammation was SO bad... There was no waiting it out :( I did not have a root canal - yet. I saw another dentist and she thought it might have been a bite problem and polished the crown more to adjust the bite. This then showed (a few days later) that another filling the other dentist had done was hitting. She fixed that too. But I'm still not out of the mouth pain yet - I have an old metal filling that is deteriorating and might be hitting! All on one side at least - so I can chew on the other side. But before we play with that old filling, I'm going to wait a week and see if my poor jaw will heal from the other issues. She mentioned it was like a bruise and takes time to heal.

Doc also mentioned switching from Asacol to Lialda when I'm done with my Asacol. Surprisingly he brought up probiotics as well. I said that I'd been on them for a couple of years and doubled my dose while on antibiotics in the hope of avoiding exactly what happened.

Right now I'm just hanging on for the ride - there is far too much happening in life right now! I'll hang on tight and hope not to go flying ;-)
