I've started to flare and the pains in my lower abdomen are really acute.I'm really needing to take tramadol to help with the pain but they have left me constipated.I've only taken 3 today and two yesterday, so i'm not overdoing it.But the problem is that i'm now constipated and in real pain, what should i do.

Call the doc. I dunno much, but being stopped up and internally having issues can't be good.

I honestly have dealt with all of the pain without meds (sometimes perhaps too hard-headed to go to the doctor, so the family tells me), with the exception of internal and external hemmies. I have had them so bad at one point that without tylenol I wasn't able to walk, and it persisted that way until it busted.. then, that was a whole new type of pain.

But in my highly uneducated opinion, I would call my doc if that was happening to me. I call my doc's nurse just about anytime I experience something that just isn't right - I apologize over and over to her for calling her so much, but she just laughs and reassures me that I can call as often as I need to, and she would rather me tell her and the doc about all the nuances and nuisances than go for weeks and end up in a terribly precarious internal situation.

Marty, definitely call your doctor. Getting constipated from opiates when you're in a flare can lead to toxic megacolon. Just check to make sure you aren't endangering your life. Also, he may be able to recommend something to relieve the constipation safely.

I agree, call ur GI.

I take percocet 3x a day for the last few yrs for chronic pain unrelated to my UC (treated at a pain management clinic). In the beginning i got very constipated. My GI helped me to learn how to control that and my body is now used to the pain meds, which no longer causes constipation. I don't want to give medical advice on relieving constipation, so you should call ur doc. good luck

hey marty... i was on opiates (endone=oxycontins) for pain last year and i was on them for 8 months straight.
i had to take stool softeners for the constipation.
not laxatives as those cause cramping. just the stool softeners and i think they were kaiser permanentes generic over the counter brand.
they worked very well. softened everything up and i went regularly.
also the consipation made it so i didnt have diarrhea all the time. just soft poos.

i am on the same opiates now for pain and the stool softeners are working fine.
i hate pain and i get it so bad that i cant move.
i would rather deal with constipation and stool softeners than the type of pain that i get without them.

Thanks everyone for your replies.I actually stopped taking them on Tuesday night and it wasn't until last night that i had to use the bathroom. Boy did i pay for those days of C.
I don't know how i'm going to get through today.I've had about 4 hours sleep and i have to go now to the recording studio to finish my album.Today is the last day and i can't cancel as itds already been paid for.I'm crippled with cramops and nausea and even walking up the stairs in my home is a major effotrt.
keep your fingers crossed i'll get through today!!

Have you called your doctor to discuss this pain? Is it new pain or have u delt with this before? My doc prescribes Zolfran which i take when my pain gets bad, otherwise, it will cause me to vomit. There are alot of things your doc could do to help make you more comfortable until u figure out why your having this pain... GL
