Do most people who take steriods gain weight? I worked really hard to lose 55 pounds over the last year and still want to lose 10-15 pounds. I have been on prednisone since getting it IV in hospital July 29th. I have been tapering off since then and went down to 10mg last tuesday. Also at what mg do people start to flare again when then cant get off prednisone.? I feel like a flare is starting and just spent 20 minutes in the bathroom. I forgot how bad this feels I have been feeling so good. My problem with prednisone is that I retain water so bad and weight gain. I have gained back probably 8 pounds. (also have hair loss and chubby cheeks) I ate alot of salads last few days and forgot to take lactaid with some milk(I havent figured out if milk is a problem or not). How long does it take for a flare to show up when tapering? I have been doing the spinach thing but not the last two days.... would appreciate input on how others react to tapering. I hope its from my diet and can keep coming off the steroids. Should I got back up to 20mg or wait?

Water retention is a big problem with steroids. You can help decrease it by really watching your salt intake. The Pred makes most people crave salt, and then they retain water. Some of the weight gain is also due to the fact that steroids make most people ravenously hungry. You can take Pred without gaining weight, but for most people it's really hard to do.

Many do, just be careful of your salt intake and portion size, drink lots of water to help fill you up, eat as much fruit and veggies you can tolerate because those typically don't cause weight gain and it's healthy food...and don't worry, as long as you're careful with diet and portion the weight from pred will diminish once you've tappered off at some point.

I get really, really hungry on steroids, too. Even on a little I still have cravings. But I get really bloated on big doses (like 40-60 mg).
If I've tapered too much I know it within a day. Others mention they have to taper really, really slowly.

That's great about your weight loss, I know it is not easy. good luck!

I am currently on prednisone and have been on alot in the past and yes omg it makes me hold onto the pounds like a fat kid holding a cheese burger! I eat super healthy and struggle in the gym daily with wieghts and cardio for atleast an hour and still the returns are so small its depressing. But I know if i can manage to lose some wieght while on prednisone then i know i am really trying hard and just hope that some day ill be off the nasty drug and go full stride then. When i am on prednisone I do all i can to pretty much to maintain my current weight and not gain weight, loseing wieght is pretty much out of the question untill i get off it.
