Hi all,
I was diagnosed with Pancolitis on 3/31/08.  cry   I've been doing okay since being put on 2 Lialdas in the morning.  Though, I was wondering, what exactly does remission mean ... do you not have any symptoms when in remission?  I haven't had blood in months but I still have a little (less than a pea size) mucus and occasionally a little more with every stool.  My stools are normal but I go between 1 to 5 times a day.  Usually, 2 or 3 though.  It depends on if I'm stressed out or ate too much the night before.  Is this what remission is?  Do you always have some kind of something going on?  Geez, I just want to be completely normal again!!!
Thanks for any advice,

Sounds like partial remission at least...I don't know if anyone ever really becomes completely normal again after getting sick with IBD, I'm sure milder cases that go into full remission might feel completely normal again I'm not sure...I've never been there...but like you, I would love to be completely normal again.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

Hi Tami...welcome to the forum!

You might strongly consider to ask the doc for rectal meds....retention enemas such as Rowasa or Salofalk if you're not in the US.
They'll help get the inflammation down and hopefully you'll have the bleeding stop and less bms.

Stress does play a part in exacerbating symptoms.

*Heather* Status..Asacol 6 (3 twice daily); enemas every 4th night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed
~Probiotic 4(Natural Factors Protec) bedtime + Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls occasionally
~multi-digestive enzymes as needed
~Ranitidine,Pariet (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!

yeah, its hard sometimes when stupid symptoms keep popping up every now and then.

i was sick last year with a really super bad flare that lasted year and 4 months. i went into remission finally in december.
i was like a normal person with no UC.

now i have flared again for about 4 months now. i have days where there is no symptoms and i only go once or twice a day. then there will be a few days of mucous, sometimes blood. then another few days later, no symptoms again.

even though i have days of no symptoms, i am NOT in remission and won't be until they are all gone.
when i have all my runs to the bathroom and poos like a normal person, then i will consider it as remission.
until then, i am just grinning and bearing it.
steph - 32 - female - UC since 2000
currently flaring again..  grrr! (triggered by stress - grrr)
mesalazine granules 3g x1 a day (much nicer than a million tablets a day)
enteric coated fish oil -omega 3 (so they get all the way to my colon)
vitamin D3 x1 a day
prednisolone 25mg x1 a day (ick ick and did i say ick?)
tumeric capsules x3 a day

If you had a cold and then it got better it wouldn't surprise you to cough up a bit of mucus now and then for a while afterwards but I think you'd still consider the cold gone.

Oddly, I read recently that the patient's ability to tell with confidence he's not going to pass something when he needs to break wind is considered a clinical marker of remission! :) Though I doubt that'll help you

well that's funny, cause I often just pass gas.... this is an interesting question that is popping up more & more, what is remission? I don't know. I guess clinical remission would be no active disease at all, anywhere in the colon. But symptomatic remission is a whole 'nother story. Currently, with my 4-6 daily formed bm's, my daily AM expulsions of bloody mucous, my ability to sleep thru the night, to leave the house without a diaper or a second thought about where a bathroom is, & being able to work 4 days a week outside my home means that I am in remission... to me! While to many this may be unacceptable, for myself..... comparing the way I am now to the way I have been the past 2 1/2 years... it is "symptom-free", so to speak! For so long I could barely leave my bed, never mind my house. Every outing was a fear-filled mess, a literal mess (in the pants) sometimes! My last scope showed about 10" of inflammation. My GI still pushes surgery, yet is willing to work with me & up some meds, possibly go to Humira if/when Remicade loses effectiveness... so he doesn't consider me to be in remission. Heck, I know I'm not really in remission, but my current symptoms do not impede my day to day life. So I'm good with that for now.

diagnosed with UC '02
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
