My 'Colitis seems to be getting worse. I'm in flare-up all the time. Most of the time I just stay in the bed and bathroom. I know no one knows what to do. but What should I be doing that I'm not.

Hi Charles,
Have you seen a GI doctor?  You didn't state too much info as to the extent of your "flare-up".  I've been in a flare since the end of March.  I was hospitalized for ten days in May.  My meds consist of Colazal, prednisone (can't seem to taper off this), 6 MP and nightly Canasa suppositories.  Unfortunately, I still "go" seven or eight times each morning, or sometimes every other morning and still see bright red blood.  I've seen a colorectal surgeon in addition to my GI doctor but was told I was not a candidate for surgery...yet.  I'm not in any pain, but do have some cramping along with the bowel movements.  I haven't tried the special diet they speak of in this forum and maybe I should.  I avoid spicey and fried foods.
Please submit a little more information.  The people in this forum are very helpful, considerate and kind.  I'm sure we will all do our best to try give you some useful information to aid in your recovery.
By the way, I was diagnosed with UC in 1998 and have had flare-ups every one to two years.  Lately, every year.  My GI doctor was pushing Remicade, but I know I am not a candidate for it as I was exposed to the TB virus back in the 50's and have had a positive reaction to the skin test in the past.  Remicade can reactivate the TB virus and have fatal results.  I also have read a lot of these posts and it seems to me that Remicade is NOT a cure, so why should I take that chance?

Hi Charles,

Welcome to the forum. There is a wealth of info to be gained from reading through the posts here. I'm not sure what special diet it is that Christine is mentioning, but there are many different diets out there that help people. Keep in mind that what helps one, doesn't mean it will help all. A food diary is especially helpful in tracking what foods upset you. Since you don't provide much info in your initial post, it is really hard to know what you've tried. Seen a doctor? Taking meds? Tried probiotics? Keep in touch with the forum, and I'm sure that people will try to help you through this flare.

I do have a GI doctor. I've had colitis off and on for almost 10 years. My doctor has been treating me four years now. I'm on a sulfa drug. I'm almost 90 so I'm afraid of surgery. My daughter in law had lupis and she took steroids and she had a mess of side effects so I don't want to do that

Hi Charles,
90!!!! WOW!!!  I should live so long!  God bless you!  The diet I mentioned is the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.  I'm not sure what it consists of...have to look it up.  I don't blame you for wanting to avoid all those harsh drugs.  I worry about taking all the crap I take because in the long run the meds will probably do me in, not the disease.  However, I don't want to take the chance in winding up back in the hospital if I do without the meds.  Sort of a Catch 22.  I am 62 by the way.
