Before any of you got UC did you take any topical gels containing clindamycin? I've done research that has linked to clindamycin to causing UC. The particular gel I took was called Duac which I took in the fall of 2004. My colitis symptoms began in the spring of 2005. I've also done research online of people who got colitis that went through on lawsuits and got a whole lot of money. Do any of you have any information on this subject?

I was diagnosed with UC in the spring of 2006. I went through the medicines of prednisone, acacol, immuran, colazal, and remicade. They all failed and I got my colon taken out in may. I then got a lower bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue. I had to get surgery to get that removed and was in the hospital 33 days for that. I am supposed to get my reversal surgery in december depending on how I heal from this last surgery. Let me know if any of you have been in this similar situation as well.

Thank you,

I had a dental treatment with clindamycin about 2-3 months before i suddenly appeared in the ER to get Diagnosed with UC.

Believe it or not, one of the dermatologists I went to see a year after my diagnosis, even though I discussed me UC related concerns prior and during the appointment, actually prescribed Duac gel for me to use on my face.

I called him back after going to the manufacturers website and reading that people with UC should not use it. I called the office up - his response - it probably wouldn't get absorbed in any sufficient degree to cause me a problem. I said "No thank you, it's not worth it to me."

Meanwhile I started using Head and Shoulders shampoo and my folliculitis (self-diagnosed) problem has been 95% cured.

Do you think I should sue the dentist for giving me clindamycin?

I use Clindamycin now for these weird little pimple thingys on my shoulders and chest. It doesn't seem to work that well for them but it doesn't seem to affect my Uc any either. I also used it when I was 16 and had acne on my back but I doubt that is what caused me to get UC. I have almost all studied ways of getting UC - hereditary link, bad German measles as a kid and food poisoning (which I think is what triggered mine). I am not convinced that one can just get it from a medication but it could very well be a trigger for some. They found that people with UC has a certain genetic code and there can be thousands out there that have the same code but haven't found a "trigger" yet.

I had minor surgery right before my first UC attack. I had out patient surgery for a deviated septum (I had terrible issues with sinus infections). Two days after the surgery, I got so sick...24 hours worh of diarrhea, black stools and a fever. I had just turned 16. My parents took me back to this surgeon, a guy I hated (he was mean and nasty to me when my parents weren't in the room.). He had precribed some kind of antibiotic after the surgery. Anyway, he just looked at me, told my parents to give me aspirin and I would be fine and keep the antibiotics going.. So my parents were giving me aspirin every four hours plus antibiotic. I got worse. My parents took me back to him and the darn doctor acted like I was faking it and insisted they keep doing the same thing. My dad got so angry and we left (he had been told this doctor was like well known and the best.). We went straight from there to the regular family doctor......who took one look at me and said if we saw no improvement by the moring, I was to come back to him. I got in the office the next day, even sicker and he admitted me to the hospital where I needed six blood transfusions.

To this day, I wonder if the combination of the antibiotic and the aspirin did me in. But it was back in 1961 and my parents just wanted me to get well. But of course UC is chronic and I would never be the same as before. In today's world, they have had a lawsuit.....but back then, no one did that.

However, I take clindamyacin when needed (not often) because my family has a history of severe allergic reations to penicillin.
So far I have done OK with it.

My doctor presribed me some clindamycin cream for some cysts I was getting on my beard area. I was adamant about not taking an oral antibiotic, so he gave me the topical. I did some research on it and never got it filled. The cysts aren't that big of a deal; certainly not worth taking a chance of flaring up again. But I had never taken clindamycin before I ever got UC, that I know of (I'm also allergic to penicillin.)

Hey there. I know its way over a year since your post, but I was googling "clindamycin ulcerative colitis" and came across your troubles. I too was prescribed clindamycin (in topical form) to treat some dermatitis around my mouth back in Dec 2007. I was a healthy, active 22 year old but I remember I started have bloody mucousy BMs shortly after and heaps of abdominal cramps. I had a colonoscopy in Feb 2008 because the diarrhoea had not stopped and I was found to have ulcerative colitis. I have been living with UC ever since and it has turned my life upside down. I also now have inflamed hair follicles on my scalp and I believe this is linked to my UC.
