Hi! I went yesterday for follow-up with my GI. She told me that I probably have UC, because 5-ASA's don't generally work in people with Crohn's. I'm VERY THANKFUL that the Asacol is working!

But, my question is do any of you have stomach ulcers in addition to the UC? What do you take for them?

Sorry, I am going to have to disagree with your GI. If a CD patient has issues with their large intestine then the 5-ASA's work for them as well. It is when their small intestine is involved that the 5-ASA's won't work. 5-ASA's are basically a "bandaid" for the large intestine. It helps with inflammation. If you go over to the CD forum, you will find that many of them are on the same medications as us.

Is the Prilosec working to help heal your stomach ulcers? If not, you can ask the doc for a stronger PPI.

Say what???    shocked waahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....It works for CD patients wih colonic involvement. I have a friend who is on it and it's worked well. yeah
Don't get it.... confused

If you have stomach ulcers from h. pylori..they will have to be treated accordingly.  Were you tested or that?

If you have stomach ulcers that are CD related...you have CD...treatment would be probably more of the immunosuppressants, or to take something like colazal without the capsule...and definitely a PPI.  Pariet is a good one....

Did you have an upper scope done recently?

Do you have rectal involvement....if yes, you should also be on rectal meds (of course, had to throw that in as usual) rolleyes

I agree with quincy. You can have stomach ulcers from h-pylori and they'll give you some antibiotics to kill it or there is something else going on. I think I was on metronidazole aka Flagyl for it, but this was prior to my UC diagnosis. So did your GI say you have stomach ulcers and didn't tell you from what?

As some of you may know, my diagnosis has been up in the air for some time btwn Crohn's and UC. My case is not classic UC, but I do have ulceration in my large intestine with bleeding, cramps and D.

I had an EGD last month and went for the follow-up yesterday. I asked for the H. Pylori test. It was negative. I didn't get a real good answer about why I have ulcers in my stomach. She mentioned stress (this is a very unstressful time in my life) and gave me an article from a medical journal about ulcers and UC, but that was in the duodenum, not antrum like mine. And- my skip lesions were evident BEFORE i EVER took ANY meds! (My GI has Crohn's and had surgery.)

Weird, the prilosec doesn't work as well as the zantac I self-prescribed. The GI says it's stronger and I should take it, though. Anyway, we're going to hold off on remicade, becasue the asacol is working all right. Not too many problems. I had my 1st cyclical flare last month. (I'd always been so sick all the time, I never noticed a difference. I take this as a good sign.)

Ugh- my dog is whining to go on a walk. He won't go out back. He definately wants a walk. What a spoiled brat!
