Is this a real issue? I've heard some people on here say their GI's have told them they have it- I think I do too! Here's why- the past 2-3 weeks, I've been really irregular- I had been having 4-6 bm's a day, in the AM, formed, no blood. But lately, I'll go for 2-3 days with maybe 1-2 bm's, very small. Then on the 3rd or 4th day, I have incredibly painful gas & cramps, & then I'm on the toilet for hours- passing massive amounts! Formed, no blood, no D except when I get near the end of the whole ordeal. It's like my colon just stopped working normally, no peristalsis. And it just holds onto everything until there's no more room, then it all comes out in one fell swoop.
It sems to be prompted by a meal, after I've eaten, things start moving. Once it happened in the morning & I had to take Immodium to drive my daughter to school. Last night I was in the bathroom from 8:00-9:00pm! Which is better than the morning, I suppose. Anyone else have similar patterns? Anyone know why all of a sudden my poor colon has become a holding tank????

This is what happened to me when I first started getting UC symptoms, only more severely. I wouldn't have any BMs for about 5 days, then on the weekend everything would come out...happened like that for a few weeks and then came the constant D, blood, etc.
Diagnosed with UC March 2007; Asacol 4 tablets 3x/day; Rowasa nightly; Canasa weekly; Viactiv; Metamucil wafers; multivitamin

I have this happen from time to time as well. I'll actually have days where I hardly ever go to the bathroom which is great, but then I feel REALLY ill, shakey, chills, sweating, nausea, cramps, etc... And I'll sit in the bathroom forever feeling like I'm having a baby, and when I finally pass some it's a bit of solid and then there's the biggest amount of D ever and it's like it was all just holding out waiting and I feel like I lost 5 pounds after.

I've never heard the term lead pipe syndrome before but yeah, it's definitely not a fun experience!!

Female, 23, Ulcerative colitis (pancolitis) for 8 years so far; GERD; gastritis; osteopenia in femur head & lumbar spine from long term prednisone use....

Current Meds:
Lexapro 10mg, Lialda 2 pills a day, Rowasa enemas nightly

it's just bizarre how suddenly it seemed to come on- things were totally unchanged for quite awhile, then suddenly this is the new pattern! When I first started having UC symptoms, they weren't like this at all. It came on very slow & painless. Now for most days- if I go 3-4 times a day, I know I'm staying fairly regular. And yes, ediekristen, it is most definitely NOT fun. I never had cramps/pain with UC before, but gosh, the cramps are terrible with these attacks! And it's mostly solids for me, only a little D. I will tell my GI when I see him next. There is actually something termed leadpipe syndrome in UC, but this isn't it. Whatever it is, it's a pain....

Not strange for the nature of the disease, for me IBD pretty much hit me like a ton of bricks...it varies for everyone though.

:)
My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

You sound like me as of late. I will go maybe once or twice in the morning with very little output and have the same the next day and then the 3rd day, I will have one semi solid bm and then all D for 4-6xs a day. It almost feels like a "plug" when that happens. The days I hardly go at all is very uncomfortable, I cramp and I feel bloated.

yeah, by day 2-3 with very little output I feel like crap...no pun intended! I can barely eat a meal, because I feel so full. It's gross. Then, after everythings out & the cramping/neausau is gone, I feel great. My stomach is quiet, no gas, I can eat anything including junk! Like today, after being miserable & stuck on the toilet for an hour last night, I've been eating fine, not a lot of stuff but eating all the same. I think I had one very tiny bm this morning... I don't mind this pattern so much, but it's hard to plan- god forbid I should be at work or somewhere when the plug lets loose! blush   Sherry is this new for you? It is for me. Maybe it's something that happens after years of semi-active flaring??? Part of me wants to up my fiber intake to 2 packets of Metamucil wafers a day, to see if that keeps things going a little more regularly. But I'm going away this wknd, so that experiment will have to wait 'til I'm housebound for a wknd! While I do enjoy the days that are basically bm-free, I sorta hate them cause I know I'll pay a hefty price in another day or so.

That solid stool can actually be a plug. If it goes on too long, check with your GI. It's possible (although not common) for your colon to become so distended with stool that it ruptures.

yeah that's what I worry about- sometimes the pain is so bad it feels like my colon is rupturing. It's just gas, but jeez..... I tend to be a worrywart about things. I have looked in various hlth. books & all, & if you're able to pass gas & stool, then you really don't have to worry about a ruptured colon. Which eases my mind, as I'm practically always able to pass one of those 2 things!

Mine doesn't hurt that bad other then a bit of cramping. And then when I do go, it feels as if I got punched in the gut on the very first initial bm and then I'm fine even if it's D. Yes, this is fairly new to me - I would say it's been happening a bit more regularly though in the past couple months. But before that I would say that it started to happen sporadically for the past year. I brought it up to my GI once but he didn't seemed too concerned. And I know the signs of a ruptured colon in which I don't have a problem passing gas either! lol (just ask my poor hubby!)
