This may be TMI but...What does mucus look like when it isn't a part of your bowel movement? I've had a weird d today and the first time I went it was definitely d but since then I feel like I have to go but what comes out definitely isn't poop so I'm wondering if I'm just passing mucus?

It looks like...mucus. Basically like something that could have come out of your nose during a bad cold, but maybe with some blood. Sometimes I just pass mucus. (Definitely TMI, I know...)

Yep, it looks like snot - sometimes clear, sometimes whitish, sometimes brown sloughish looking when it is mixed in with stool.

It doesn't happen all the time but I think it happened the other day because of the classes I'm taking this semester. I've used the comparison before but it looks like...a space nebula. I'll show you a picture...
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/writing/images/eagle_nebula_heic0506b_f.jpg.
Look at the brown chunk part in the middle. It kind of looks like that but even looser. I don't think you can even count it as poop and it definitely doesn't look like it. Kind of like a bunch of slimy fibers stuck together My UC bowel movements NEVER looked like that.

Any ideas?

That kind of looks mucusy to me. I've had some really fibrous stuff like that before, too, that to me almost looked like pieces of tissue sloughing off. Do you remember eating anything that could have that sort of appearance on the way out? I really have no clue. But nice use of digital photography...

Maybe TMI but not here.  I am 68 and would like to reassure you that is UC to me!!  I describe it to my NP as soft liver - she said could be stool mixed with mucous or blood - nothing most of us haven't had before!

strange that copy and paste doesn't work...but I looked up eagle nebula anyway.

I'd say it's a mixture of loose stool and mucus...any rectal pain with it?

Food intake and stress can definitely play a part in how fast the digestive tract moves..as well as inflammation. If you have IBS as well, that's probably the culprit.

I would say to make sure you add a probiotic for sure!
As well, fibre supplement to keep things more bulked...it also absorbs that mucus and fibrous stuff.

I don't know if the fibrous stuff is really the lining or if it's just really loose stool particles. I get that on occasion, especially from eating too much fruit.

If it continues with rectal pain and urgency, then something's going on...rectal meds should be started then...or maybe consider to take them now once every few days.

Keep us posted.

I don't feel like I'm falling out of remission though. That happened Thursday and I've haven't had a problem since. I even went out to eat last night and felt fine after. If it is mucus I know that IBS can cause mucusy stools too and even though I haven't professionally been diagnosed with IBS I can almost guarantee I have it.

I had some cramping but I could hold it a couple minutes before heading the the bathroom and it wasn't terribly painful. I'm in organic chemistry and it is completely kicking my butt plus I have anxiety issues on top of that.
I can definitely add a pro biotic (I should be on one anyway) but I'm a little iffy on the fiber. I was on fiber supps when I was flaring and they made me feel even worse and even now if I have too much fiber in food I bloat up like a balloon.
I want to chalk it all up to stress, organic chemistry and IBS...

Oh, I remember when my son took organic chemistry - yikes!!  He is 45 now and a senior chemist at Abbott Labs in Chicago.  He has a PhD from Cornell but organic chemist threw him for a loop!  Hard to stay calm and handle that type of stress.  See if you can get extra exercise - that will help.

I have had IBS for about 30 years and stress and certain food can bring on just about anything.  Hang in there.

yep, Elaine...thanks...it was the . that was the culprit.

Sam...smaller amounts of fibre would help.

Are you eating OK?

Sam, I get that quite often. I have no other symptoms when it happens so I blame it on something I ate. I think I may have IBS in addition but I'm not sure - never persued it. In fact, I had it just yesterday. The night before I went out with some friends and had a couple of drinks. Of course my colon didn't like it yesterday but I had hardly any D but alot of that fiberous mucously thing going on.

Actually I'm eating better than I have before. Less sugar more fruits and veggies (cause I can handle them). I've been drinking a TON of water. I was a pop addict for a very long time and over the summer I decided to stop and I only drink it when I'm out to eat etc.

fruits and veggies and a ton of water can increase transit time...

Maybe add a fibre supplement to bulk...like adding flour to an apple cake...lol!

Haven't had a problem since. My GI actually told me drinking lots of water is good for the colon. And since I cut out pop that's really all there is left
