Hello all,
I experienced two days with NO blood.  Now I see the bright red blood again..bummer.  My stools are formed, no cramping or pain.  My UC is confined to the rectum.  I am not scheduled to see my GI doctor until Nov 13th, last appointment was Aug 5th.  I am down to 5 mgm of prednisone every other day, 6 colazal a day, 50 mgm of 6MP and Canasa suppositories alternate nights with Cort enemas.  Any suggestions?  Remicade is NOT an option.

You're tapering the pred....you'll see rebound symptoms from what understand.
We all will have some increase and decrease of symptoms while healing.  Especailly on prednisone..but I've never been on it, info is from what I've read.

When you taper the pred...alternate the dosage by doing 5, 2.5, 5, 2.5, 5, 2.5....2.5, 2.5...etc.

Could it be hemmoroids? I have been on rectal meds for two weeks and have had days of no blood and then it returns. It's depressing but I guess we have to be patient especially if the stools are formed and the urgency is less.... you are getting better honey - God willing.

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Patches of Mild Colitis (including Rectum) - Currently Minor Bleeding
Medication: 1000mg Mesalazine Suppository at night.

I seem to be in about the same place.  Rowasa every night is causing rectal soreness but no other changes.  No sure about Lialda - just happy no bad side effects - YET!  Generally, those come after about 5 or 6 days - I am on day 3.

Believe it or not...I am not stressing, just coping.  I called my GI doctor today to see if he has any other "suggestions", since I am following everything he ordered.  He hates putting me back on prednisone and I hate taking it, but since I refuse Remicade his hands are tied.  I'm watching my diet but do have a sweet tooth and did eat a piece or two of hard candy.  I really don't think it hurts.  I had half a bagel with Smart Balance spread and decaf for breakfast, lunch...yogurt and some frozen yogurt...dinner will be baked salmon, sweet potato and cooked carrots.

I am hungry now - that sounds good!  I really don't think what we eat has a lot to do with flaring except if we are allergic or sensitive to certain food.  Doctor just told me to eat bland and low fiber until bleeding stopped.  I try!

Why are you against Remicade?  Just curious - I may be ask to try that someday - who knows?

Hi Elaine,
Back in the 60's I worked in a hospital lab and was exposed to the TB virus.   Before a European trip in 67 I tested positive on the skin test they give you for TB.  I had a chest xray and everything was ok.  However, it just signified that I was exposed to the virus.  I also had an aunt by marriage who died from TB and we used to visit her when I was a kid.  Remicade can reactivate the TB virus and can have fatal results.  My GI doctor was really pushing the Remicade on me, but I steadfastly refuse it.  Funny thing is....his associate who took care of me in the hospital in May said absolutely NO REMICADE.  He witnessed a patient die from the infusions who, like me, had the virus dormant in her system.

Christine - thanks for the explanation.  I have learned so much here.  I am avoiding talking about immune suppressants and steroid.  My husband has cancer and I don't need to be getting and giving any virus to him.  Also, I have seen the side effects of steroid with him and our dog, etc.  I will avoid both if at all possible - rather have UC symptoms as long as they are not life threatening.  I guess I can choose a little better being 68.

I agree with you Elaine.  I hate taking prednisone too but that seems to be the only thing that stops the bleeding.  However, this time my proctitis is very stubborn.  I am finally off the prednisone..looooong taper, still bleeding but I believe the Canasa and Cort enemas are helping.  I really have to be more careful with my diet.  We go out a lot and I eat things I shouldn't, my bad.
