Do any of you suffer from insominia w/ this disease?  I must admit I am stressed right now.  We live in an unrestricted area and the person next door, who owns the property, but doesn't live there (the property is vacant other than the owner putting "goats" on the property) and the smell is disgusting and I am either woken up by the sound of the goats or when we walk outside the smell is disgusting.  What can I do?  I'm pissed and I'm disgusted and I'm stressed.  Do you think I can get a doctors excuse that due to the stress my UC is flaring and the goats have to go?  Am I rediculous?  I don't know.  Just very stressed and frustrated.  Any ideas?

Ah, goats? I am sorry to hear that. That would frustrate me to no end. However, I do suffer from insomnia as well. It drives my parent's crazy. I will be doing everything that should be done during the day, at night. A few weeks ago, I decided to make spaghetti at 3 am. I make random trips to WalMart. I go buy lottery scratch off tickets at 4am. I feel as though I am going insane sometimes. I would love to get a goods night sleep, but I have not had one in months. You are not alone my friend. Believe me. Have you tried taking Melatonin? It is inexpensive and your body produces it naturally. I should be taking Melatonin, however, I misplaced my bottle and I have yet to go to buy another.

I know exactly how you feel.During my worst flares i have gone for days without any sleep.Stress is a major factor!!!! Try finding ways to reduce stress and you will find it easier to sleep.I was put on every type of sleeping medication by my doctor and they had somenasty side effects. I have tried melatonin and it is a lot safer than the sleep meds but it never really worked well for me.My FRIEND TAKES MELATONIN CAPSULES AND SLEEPS WELL THOUGH.
(sorry caps)
Now i manage ok with 5 hours sleep a night. If i'm stressed which happens a lot i won't sleep at all,to combat stress i go a walk for half hour and it really works to lower stress levels.
hope you get rest soon

Do you live in the city or in a rural area? If in the city, look into your city's laws about keeping animals. If in a rural area, there may not much you can do other then leave a note for the owner. But if the animals are dirty or not kept well, you can contact your local humane society to have them come investigate.

As for insomnia - you betcha! I am a chronic insomniac, going on 6 years. There was a time that I got around 4 hours sleep in a 5 day span. I started getting hallucinations - not good! So I was placed on a sleep aid which I stopped because of the crazy things I was doing in my sleep. Right now I take Tylonel Simply Sleep and that doesn't do anything adverse to me. Try to relax before bed, sit some place that will be quiet, read or listen to music and drink some Sleepy Time tea by Celestial seasonings, and take some Melatonin about an hour before bed. As for your bedroom, run a fan - the "white" noise will help hide the sound of the goats. I know lack of sleep is just horrible!

Thanks you guys sometimes it feels good to just release! And Red we do live in a rural area and I am sure that there is nothing I can do about these disgusting animals. It just irritates me. I do run my ceiling fan, but he has put several over there - Grrrrrrrrr. I do plan to at least check and see if there is anything that we can do.

I have always had major problems going to sleep at night. My body will be exhausted but my mind won't stop racing (I also have restless leg syndrome which acts up when I try to sleep). My gastroenterologist suggested that I take 2 benadryl and 1 melatonin each night and if that didn't work he would prescribe me something. The benadryl/melatonin combination has done wonders for me.

WOW sounds like we all are insomniacs.  Wonder if it has something to do with this disease?  They gave me Ambien CR in the hospital and unfortunately I am hooked on it.  It is only 6.5 mgm but whenever I try going without it, it seems like I am up half the night and the next day I feel like a zombie.  Ambien doesn't seem to have any adverse effect on me.  Before that I occasionally took Tylenol pm, or rather Walgreen's version of it.  Tylenol can affect the liver and I don't need that because of all the other meds I am on for UC.

As far as the goats go.  If you live in a rural area guess you gotta bite the bullet.  That stinks (no pun intended).  I live in the suburbs but sometimes I think I would rather take the goats than the party animals that live next door to us.  They have wild parties and some of their guests are downright rude...go skinny dipping at 3a.m.  I already called the cops on them twice.  We have a quiet time ordinance in this town from 11 pm thru 8 am.  I did go next door hand have a heart to heart talk with the wife.  I tried to be as pleasant as possible but sometimes ignorant people are just that...ignorant.  Sooo...I kinda scared her in saying that I wanted to speak with her before taking further steps...she got the drift.  I can take them to court.  Since then, almost six weeks now, they have quieted down considerably.

Ambien is the best, but its a little scary. It was a godsend when I was trying to sleep in a noisy hospital room, but the nurse told me the morning after my first night on it that they took my vitals while I was sleeping because TWO nurses could NOT wake me up. And that was only an hour after I took it. WOW! Powerful stuff!
