Hi my name is Jordan, and I have had ulcertive colitis for about two years now.  I have never been fully off the steriods, every time I am almost off I get a flare up.  I have recently had a little blood in my stools but they are formed.  I am on 10mg of the steriods, taking iron, methodrexate, and just starting humera.  I dont want to go back up on the steriods, but I will if it is absolutly needed. any advice?

Hi Jordan,

Welcome!  Have you tried probiotics, like culturelle or primadophilus reuteri?  Also a fiber supplement might be helpful.  Are you using any rectal meds?  They would be a good part of your treatment.

There are lots of posts here with suggestions that you will find helpful.  Hang in there!

Potato...  Female, 58, dx 11/07 mild left sided ulcerative colitis (50 cm)
asacol 3 3x a day, cortenema (generic) am & pm rowasa every other day  culturelle, benefiber wafers  generic acidophilus, metamucil wafers, activia, primadophilus reuteri
children's vitamin, Vitamin E 400 mg, omeprazole 2xday
oxazepam when needed, lomotil or ImodiumAD (not in the same day) when needed
Yoga, meditation, The Work by Byron Katie, exercise at least 5 days a week

Hi, welcome to Healingwell :) What is the extent of your Uc? Have you tried any of the 5-ASA's such as Asacol or Colazal? What about rectal meds? Have you given those a go yet?

Just wanted to let u know that the longer u r on Humira, u will see a difference. I'm kinda partial to Humira since it's helped me for over a year. I was flared so bad around Feb. 2007 - April 2007, my doctor put me on 2 shots every 2 weeks. So, works! He's eventually taking me down to 1 shot every 2 weeks, but won't find that out til January. Hopefully with taking the Humira, u will be able to get off the prednisone. I haven't been on prednisone since last year too. But.... everyone's body is different.

humera is like remicade.  I was on the remicade but we (me and the doctors) felt that it wasnt doing much for me.  along with the medication I am also taking fish oil, and vsl3.  for humera this friday I am going down from two shots every two weeks to one shot every week.  Im praying this will work, just tired of having nothing work except the steriods.  Thanks for all your input!
