What consititutes a flair? Can blood and mucous be the ONLY signs of a flair up?

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Patches of Mild Colitis (including Rectum) - Currently Minor Bleeding
Medication: 1000mg Mesalazine Suppository at night.

Not at all....urgency is another, rectal pain upon bms, frequency of bms, nausea, constipation...etc.

It depends as well as to where in the colon one's UC is as to the flare (not flair) symptoms are...although one can flare with flair! ;-)

Low in the rectum flares can consist of constipation, rectal pain and bleeding (if the tissue is that fragile).

Just had virtually no blood with a BM. But had loads of fresh blood in the morning dripping into the pan. It varies day by day. I took 2 Imodium last week and didn't bleed for 3 days! It's strange.

I wonder if LondonRed was asking if you can be in a flare with blood and mucuous as your ONLY symptoms. Does that constitute a flare? Or do you have to have something else as well (urgency, tenesmus, numerous BMs, diarrhea...)?

Yeah that's what I was asking emory.... but didn't say it well.

My doc seems to think inflammation = diarrhoea/loose stools.

Someone may have already asked you this in another thread, but-- has your doctor ruled out Crohn's colitis? You write in your signature that you have "patches" of inflammation, which is typical of Crohn's colitis, whereas UC generally occurs with unbroken stretches of inflammation. Flares can have different symptoms depending on severity & extent of inflammation. Urgency & tenesmus indicate that the rectum is very inflamed. A flare pattern that members writing here seem to describe most often starts with excess mucus, then increasing diarrhea, noticing blood, then urgency & from there people tend to feel crampy, fatigued, and then a whole-body reaction can set in leading to joint pain/stiffness, nausea, fever, & such. Good luck with your sig-scope! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 3 Colazal daily for maintenance of remission)

LondonRed,

Sounds like you need some oral meds asap, as rectal meds usually cannot do it on their own and visa versa.
