I just noticed on the side of my Metamucil tub the following: "Laxatives, including bulk fibers, may affect how well other medicines work. If you are taking a prescription medicine by mouth, take this product at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after the prescribed medicine." I tried to Google this for details, but just kept hitting the same text over and over again. Does anyone know anything more about this?

Because it "absorbs" and increases peristalsis...it might not allow the proper amount of meds to go through your body..it could possibly be less than more.

Some meds dissolve in the stomach, some dissolve in the small intestine, some in the colon....depending on the med time taken and where it dissolves plus where the metamucil is at the time can affect the dosage dispursed.

Take your metamucil with supper and maybe with lunch if you're not taking meds during those times.

I started the Metamucil Smooth again because I've had a minor setback..makes things much "smoother" on the way out too.

I usually take it somewhere between supper and 10ish.

When you start wearing 3 watches with timers...it's time to realise you cannot add any more meds..lol!

Thanks, quincy - that's what I suspected. Since last Friday, I've been taking my Metamucil with other meds: the first couple of nights with all my sleep meds (and the third night was entirely sleepless!), and the last few with my Effexor and methimazole at 7:30 pm. I'd been feeling really low energy and depressed as compared to the week before. Wonder if I was messing myself up. Took the Metamucil at 5:30 yesterday, and today I really do feel better.

Three watches with timers - yikes! So far I just keep it all in my head and obsess about what I need to do next: eat, take a med, run to the bathroom, or prepare to sleep. What a life.

I had never noticed that warning before. Thanks for the info Quincy, and sorry to hear that you've had a setback. Another thing that can affect meds is citrus fruit juice. Causes some meds to be less effective, other meds to be overly effective. Again, take your meds a couple of hours before or after drinking any fruit juice.

Emory, how's it going? Did this week see any improvement for you? Do you think you might be able to get a short hike in before snow closes out the mountains for the year? We've already had a cople of snow dustings in the high country, or so I've heard...haven't been up there to see for myself this year.

Well, this week included a a slight cold and a sleepless night on Sunday, plus (to be graphic) red toilet bowls on T-W-Th am's, so it hasn't been great, yet overall I think I may be improving. The doctor said blood would be the last to go, so don't worry about it too much.

I will definitely get in a short hike somewhere, Brandon, even if it's just the hills around town. It's still in the 70s this weekend, but I won't be doing much - my husband's in Denver for work. The kid and I will just hang out and soak up the rays, I guess.

My big concern right now is that I'm supposed to go to Helena for a meeting next Thursday (two-hour drive with coworkers starting at 7:30 am), and I don't know if I'm up for it. I don't want to be a big chicken, and I don't want to look like I'm not a team player, but it's an awkward situation. The meeting will go through lunch, and PIZZA will be provided for all. My boss said don't worry about it if I can't come, but I don't know her well enough to know if she really means it. (She's based in Helena.) Just saw her two days ago, and her first words to me were, "You look horrible. Are you okay?" She meant it well, though, really.

Okay, enough ranting. Thanks for asking how I am; sorry you got an earful!

A quick question about the Metamucil.  Not aquainted with it.  Is it for fiber?  When I am in a flare, fiber really does a negative number on me.  I do take one capsule of flaxseed oil daily.  That is supposed to make things come out smoother too.

Calcium, Probiotic, Flaxseed oil capsule, multivitamin with Iron

I wouldn't have asked if I couldn't handle an earful or a rant.

I don't suppose the drive to Helena could be done in a separate car? Or would that just increase the awkwardness? Maybe conference call? This might not be an option, but have you ever tried Immodium? I use it sparingly because it has serious rebound effects in me, but when flying, or long drives, or family get-togethers when a bathroom isn't exactly convenient, I'll take a pill and I'm good for the day. Of course, I also don't eat anything that day just to cover all my bases. And it totally sucks that you are worried about having a slice of pizza or two. Nobody'll probably notice if you skip that part, just means more for everyone else. lol I've been refusing donuts and cookies at work, and everyone thinks I'm crazy. I've been trying to get someone to bring in bagels, but for some reason, everyone would rather eat yummy sweet buttery goodies than plain old bagels...imagine that.

Enjoy the sun this weekend, and get out for a walk. Fresh air and exercise do a body and mind wonders. How old is your kid? Boy or a girl? At the very least, go sit on a swing set for a while and get the kid out of the house. It must be difficult to deal with this disease and still try to raise a family and work. Whenever I start to feel sorry for myself about my hermitness, I actually count my blessing that at least it only affects me. I truly admire your strength and perserverance. I really hope something starts to work for you, and you can get things back on track. Stay in touch.

Christine, the Metamucil is soluble fiber (psyllium husks) -- the smooth kind, not the scratchy stuff, as I understand it. It's supposed to bulk up the stool. I'm taking it on my doctor's recommendation; as I've mentioned in other posts (sorry I keep repeating myself) he said it might be the most important part of my treatment.

Brandon, thanks for listening, and for the good ideas. I hadn't thought of Immodium. But I may just not worry about it and be sick for the day. Of course, that may become even more of a reality: just talked to a good friend who we visited yesterday, and her daughter (who we spent time with) woke up with a raging fever and sore throat this morning. Ah, the joys of childhood bugs!

My daughter is five. She's great, but boy, does she have a lot of energy! Fortunately she also likes TV (a bit too much)...

Hope you get out and enjoy the sun, too, and take care --

I don't know, WishfulMA, I don't have the wafers, but I think it is the same amount of fiber.

Odd, my GI doctor never mentioned Metamucil to me.  Early this morning I had four loose bowel movements but only a tad of blood, a great improvement from Thursday, when I bled all over the floor.  Of course I started back on 40 mgm of prednisone on Thursday too, hated to do it and my doctor, I am sure, hated to prescribe it, but hey, it works.  Wonder if the flaxseed oil capsule is making my bm's loose?  I only take one a day and the bottle says take three a day.  I so wish I could get into a long term remission.  Beginning to forget what feeling good actually feels like.

"Beginning to forget what feeling good actually feels like." I know what you mean. Last night I was thinking, I have to find something else to occupy my thoughts, something else to enjoy, to want to do. And I realized the only thing I really want right now is to be in remission, to be done with this, at least for a little while.

Metamucil smooth and the wafers contain both soluble and insoluble fibre. Both contain the same amount.
One tablespoon of the sugar-free smooth contains 2 grams soluble/1 gram insoluble fibre.
2 wafers contain 2 grams soluble/1 gram insoluble fibre.

We need both in our diet...both absorb water..but the soluble makes a "gel" and helps absorb and carry away impurities as well. The insoluble just swells and remains the same in shape (same as vermicullite works in soil), it helps in preventing solid/hard stools and helps "sweep" impurities in the colon. As well, they are important food for bacteria flora in the colon to feed on...

I've started the Metamucil smooth again (thanks emory) because of a minor setback. I use a tbsp after supper and I can see how it'll help my hemmies because the stools leave a bit smoother than before.

Fibre isn't necessarily a "four letter word"...we all need it, but can benefit by supplements that suit our needs, be it diarrhea or constipation. Both of which can be caused by inflammation or IBS.

LoL Quincy 3 watches...never heard of that one. Shoot if my mom had a watch for her Diabetic Meds then she would only have 6....or so. Wow thx though i wonder if it is the same thing for benifiber? O well i take those when i go to bed so i should be good. By the way sometimes some meds should be taken later in the day just because they work better when you are asleep or awake.

emory...thanks..things are doing better, was probably some bugaboo I ingested in something (I did up the enemas anyway and doing a quick taper). Missed the metamucil last night...feels just wrong, lol!!

Tawn..6 watches could be the next fad! You're right about the night/day med times...depending on side effects as well as the reason they're taken.
The same would be for any fibre supplemets and meds.
