I've been on 6MP for five years. When I first started taking it, along with the prednisone, it took about four months or so to kick in. However, it has NOT kept me in remission. I have suffered flares about once a year. They usually last two months, with me going back on the prednisone. This last flare started beginning of April, I had to be hospitalized ten days in May, fed through a PIC line along with the meds. Cannot seem to get into a full remission now. As soon as I get weaned off the prednisone...boom...two weeks later back in full blown flare...bleeding, diarrhea, urgency. Can count a total of four weeks without prednisone since April. Seeing my GI doctor on Monday to find out if he has to up my dosage of the 6MP. You have to have your blood monitored very carefully while on 6MP too. When I was admitted to the hospital my Amylase and Lipase were off the wall and the doctor thought the 6MP was the culprit (pancreatic enzyme levels). By the time I left the hospital they were back to normal and he put me back on it. Sometimes I wonder. So far so good with the enzyme levels though.
