I've been on 6mp since august, and I know it takes a while for it to start working. I tapered off the prednisone, flared back up and am currently tapering down again (Two 10 mg tabs a day, one in the morning and one at night currently). How long did it take for you guys?

I started first week of July, and it's still not quiet there yet, but has gotten better. Everyone is different but my GI told me from 3-6 months.

Hey, Doc - your signature says you take Immuran - is that 6MP?  Boy, I am getting dumber and dumber instead of smarter about this UC!

3-6 months.  Make sure you taper VERY slowly off pred at the end to remain in remission while the 6 mp starts to ramp up.  Also make sure you watch your foods and stress levels as your getting lower in pred.

I've been taking 6MP since end February after massive blood transfusions, but also take 6 x 750mg of Colazide (mesalazine) as well. The colazide by itself at 4 a day weren't strong enough for me (a la the massive bleeding) but 6 a day was. I think the Dr wants to slowly convert me over to just 6MP. Been off pred since 18 May and no flares so I figure the 3-6 months everyone is saying is probably right!

Elaine, Imuran is different then 6mp. They are the same type of med though - Imuran breaks down into 6mp in the liver. Some people do better with that break down while others can handle the purer form of 6mp.

I have been on 6mp for 2 years. I started seeing an improvement at 7 weeks but I didn't get the full benefit until around the 3 month mark.

I've been on 6MP for five years.  When I first started taking it, along with the prednisone, it took about four months or so to kick in.  However, it has NOT kept me in remission.  I have suffered flares about once a year.  They usually last two months, with me going back on the prednisone.   This last flare started beginning of April, I had to be hospitalized ten days in May, fed through a PIC line along with the meds.  Cannot seem to get into a full remission now.   As soon as I get weaned off the prednisone...boom...two weeks later back in full blown flare...bleeding, diarrhea, urgency.  Can count a total of four weeks without prednisone since April.    Seeing my GI doctor on Monday to find out if he has to up my dosage of the 6MP.  You have to have your blood monitored very carefully while on 6MP too.  When I was admitted to the hospital my Amylase and Lipase were off the wall and the doctor thought the 6MP was the culprit (pancreatic enzyme levels).  By the time I left the hospital they were back to normal and he put me back on it.  Sometimes I wonder.  So far so good with the enzyme levels though.

Still flaring.   Afraid that I am pred dependant.  Back on Pred 40 mgm for five days, then taper.  Other meds...Colazal, 6MP, Nexium, Cort enemas, Canasa suppository, Benicar, Toprol xl, water pill.
Calcium, Probiotic, Flaxseed oil capsule, multivitamin with Iron
Also have osteoporosis and high blood pressure
Remicade NOT an option. Not a candidate for surgery yet..says surgeon.

Thanks for all the info.  This afternoon I see the NP who has been conferring with the doctor about what to do for me next.  All the info I have helps me to understand what I might be in for.  Since I am so sensitive to medication (like 1/4 of Benedryl puts me to sleep) he is being very careful I know to keep doses down and maybe they just aren't enough to get the job done.  I truly have a mild case after reading this forum but the doc did call it procosigmoiditis so I know it  goes up left side - hoping to remember to ask NP if she knows how far.

My NP knows I come to this forum and says it is good but I never want to ask so much that I look like I know more than her or the doctor.  I will play it cool.
