Oh no! My 17 year old just told me he has had two trips to the bathroom today and the second was loose and there was blood. If this remission is ending, it was his longest at about 14 or so months.

Why does it feel like the floor drops out from under you when you hear your child say they saw blood. We've been doing this for 6 years now, but it doesn't get easier.

What is your first step when you ha loose stool with blood? I don't think we have Procto Foam left. We do have Canasa suppository... He gave me a dirty look when I suggested he start them again, said let's wait. I'll call on Monday.

I feel dazed. I don't feel ready to go through this right now. I guess I don't really have a say in the matter, do I. What if I start crying and can't stop?

Wow, both your children have UC? You have a lot on your shoulders, Julie. Your right, he's 17 doesn't make it easy though does it. Just don't cry - give him the strength he needs and keep loving him as you do. I'll put all of you on my prayer list!

Thank you, Gigi. Prayers are much appreciated. Yes, I have two kiddos with this nasty disease. You'd think I'd be an old pro, but I'm not!! I sometimes don't know how we've made it through 6 years of this. It doesn't get easier, if anything I think it gets harder.

Thanks again!

He should start the Canasa, but another few days of waiting for a script for the foam won't matter one way or the other considering he doesn't want to start them anyway.

Curious if he was constipated in the weeks before the frequency started?

I will talk to him again about the canasa and as far as I know he has been "regular" - what makes you ask about constipation? Do you think he should up his sulfasalazine? He only takes 2 500mg pills, 3 times per day. He has taken higher doses during flares, but a the highest dose I was beginning to wonder if it was too much and making things worse - highest dose was 6 grams or 12 pills.

Thanks so much.

Hi..constipation is a symptom of low in the rectum inflammation. Sometimes if it's constant, it can be recognised earlier and rectal meds increased.

I don't know what the theraputic dosage of sulfasalazine is...but higher doesn't necessarily mean lowering of symptoms if some of them are med induced.

The rectal meds are something that we don't like to use, but necessary "evil" considering UC starts at the rectum and it will always be inflamed no matter how high the extent of an individual's disease.
Pills won't reach that area or be able to treat it totally.
